Will my 73 Rallye beat a stock 5.0 mustang?
« on: January 15, 2008 - 04:48:05 PM »
Hi, I have a 73 rallye, 340, headers, edelbrock 600, and a mild cam -3.23 suregrip. There is this kid down the street that keeps taunting me. He has a 89 5.0 stock mustang. I really want to teach him a lesson, but would kinda like some feedback before I do. Any thoughts on this matchup? thanks

having drove both I would say you would take him without a problem.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I would bet no.  Mustang has better power/weight ratio

Could be true.  Bet it would be a good race.  Change to a 3.91 rear axle ratio and it would be no problem though.

This scares me. If your 340 is still pretty much the same engine it was back in '73, other than the cam... I don't know. If your engine was rebuilt and is no longer choked by air-polution stuff, that helps... but your small carb tells me otherwise. I would think twice about this. Just my 2 cents worth.  :2cents:

It would be a good race if the 5.0 is stock or close to it.I had an new stock `83 Gt 5.0 that was quick but your 340 combo makes up for the extra wieght.

What I would do...

Take a week-end trip to another town pretty far away,   look up a Mustang, and race it..

If you win, go home and  :horse: spank that local Mustang..

If you loose,  just keep playing hard to get racing...

I'd say you could pull him from the start and stay ahead until the 'Stang gets into triple digits...Then when that happens, turn him over to me and I'll smoke him the rest of the way to 158-162-ish with my Stealth TT. :2thumbs: :grinyes:

I drive a 375...soon 425 h.p 340, 4 speed, now 5.With 3:91's ,.747 cam,TTI's,650 carb.RPM intake.  I don't go down easy. Never lost to a mustang yet.I have a bigger carb on the way.I lost to a diesel truck once. :walkaway:   The mustangs are all over, and can be made very fast for nothing.Comparativley speaking. The 3:91's really help for a streetlight car,I love 'em.   If the Ferd is stock, you will probably drive away.  I never back down, and don't mind loosing. I'd go show him what you got!!!! :burnout:
