How bad do you need one? I know where there is an AC compressor laying with all the parts.

Thanks for the reply.  Honestly I'm not going to bust my butt for one because it never gets hot enough up here in PA to REALLY need it, and since I have a new engine to build, I'm not going to waste money on the old one.  :)

Besides, even if I got a full 318 A/C system for free, the cost of filling it with R12 would put me in the poor house!

No problem. I just haven't decided if I want to put mine back on.

If it's the original setup, I'd say don't even bother with it.  R12 is very, very difficult to come by, and costs a few hundred dollars per pound.  I'm not sure the precise numbers, but these cars use quite a few pounds of freon.  You'd probably be looking at a few thousand to get it up and running again.

You can also pay a few thousand to get a modern, R134 converted setup that'll bolt right in and work great.  It might be the same start-up cost, but maintaining R134 is pretty cheap - usually about $35 a pound.

It is the original parts. I took it all off when i bought the car. My guy works pretty cheap. $20 an hour and he said he'd change it over for me. But honestly there are more important things I want to do to the car. And it really hasn't bothered me not having AC.

Don't quote me on this but I think there is a drop in replacement for R12 now, haven't gotten to mine yet(next car) that should cost a lot less. have to check on how much they hold, i do central ac & they only hold 12 or 13 lbs on average, can't imagine a car holding more that a couple a lbs(3 or 4? ) rich.

Newer, current-model cars only hold 3-4 pounds.  However the older cars - especially Caddy's and Lincolns and such - could take over 12 pounds!

I've sold many, many an A/C job.  :)

Jeff, keep in mind when you switch to a big-block, you'll have to make some changes in the AC system. Brackets and maybe lines. I wouldn't worry about it now if I were you.   :2cents:

All the original A/C stuff is on mine yet, glad it is.  shelbydogg said that all he did was put in a few fancy o-rings, and his R-12 system worked fine with r-134a.  An A/C guy, buzzard maybe, said that is do-able.  I cant wait to do it to mine.  Way cheaper than going original r-12, or buying all new stuff for r-134a.  All original parts used too...   :dunno: :dunno:  Just a thought.  I'll see if I can find the thread.

:iagree: There is kits out there to convert your r12 to r134.It's easy most come with new fittings that screw on to your old fittings then you add the new ester oil and charge the system.
