Will this work in my 73 8 3/4
« on: January 17, 2008 - 10:48:43 PM »
I saw an ad locally for the following:

1969  8 3/4"   centersection!. 489 case w/ 3:23 gears!. Sure-grip is weak,probably needs rebuild or replace! $300.00.

My 73 was originally a 318 and I'm going with a 440 so I'm pretty sure it had 2:76 gears.  Any thoughts, on the swap or the price?  From what I've read it should work, but is it a good idea?

sounds like a decent buy , no reason not to
it should be a cone sure grip which is not rebuildable but if it has a clutch type it coul dbe rebuilt

It is a 1969 which according to what I found says that is the only year for the 489 case that is rebuildable(not cone type).  According to the picture in the ad it looks true as long as that is the actual unit.  Is that true?

Some 69 489 cases came with the clutch type sure grip, but not all did.  Post or send the photo ans somebody here should be able to tell you.  Look for the ring of bolts opposite the ging gear that hold the sure grip unit together.  If there is a ring of bolts there, it is a rebuildable clutch type.

Is there another picture? We need to see the other side of the ring gear to look at the carrier.

That's all I got.  I'm trying to go see it this afternoon. Anything specific I should be on looking for?  From what I've seen it does not look like the cone type.

If that thing is in nice shape and has a clutch posi, it is a really good deal.  Especially with no shipping.

I just talked to the seller it is a cone type.  He says the local machine shop has had limited success in rebuilding them.  Anyone else ever hear this?  I'm skeptical but will keep on researching and inspect the unit on Sunday.

I wouldn't mess with "rebuilding" one. After "rebuilt" their life isn't as long as original or as strong.

you can machine the ends off the cones to allow it to work somewhat , you also need to shim up the spring pack , it works for a while

Is it worth buying and replacing with an Auburn Gear unit?
