Looking For a little advice!!
« on: January 18, 2008 - 01:31:01 PM »
Trying to make the boat a little faster. Here is what I have.
440 .030 over
six pack rods
Speed pro 2295 dome pistons
Stock 906 heads

Will the 440source heads work with these pistons? The boat came with an R.V. cam in it, which I want to change. Vacuum is not an issue, since there are no accessories expect an alternator. The transmission is on F-N-R. Highest RPM I would want spin is about 5000 with the current underwater gear. I just want the most aggresive cam that would work with this set-up. What are your your reccomendations? Tunnel Ram, single plane, dual plane? Just lookin for a little advice.

Isee no reason Why the 440 source heads wouldn`t work with your pistons , I would ask Brandon though , just not sure how much real gain you will see unless your heads are unported , If you are willing to go to a solid grind Cam I would look at a small ultraDyne grind with a huge midrange powerband & 110 Cl , I can giv eyou specific specs , if you want to sty Hyd look at the VooDoo cams or get a custom ground Englewith an 1800-5500 rpm powerband , the intake I would choose is the Performer RPM it will give max midrange power & no height problems to worry about

Well the heads should be here tomorrow, along with the whole 1.5 roller rocker set-up.. So going with a solid cam wouldn't be a problem. The 906 heads are unported, so hopefully I see some improvment. I will give Engle a call and see what they say

or I can get you exact spec for the UlraDyne cam , you will need different pushrods & rockers for a solid cam , I would use either the Crane ductile iron or the comp Pro Magnum stainless rockers
you shouldbe able to get a 225-230* grind with close to .500" lift from Engle in a hyd grind that will work with a 1800-5500 rpm powerband

No height problem, that's why I was thinking a tunnel ram. I just run open headers, and haven't got a ticket yet, I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

I had a buddy that had a speed boat that called a Challenger made in Western Oklahoma in the late 70's that had a 454 Chevy. I couldn't convince him to put a Mopar engine in it but the thing was plagued. Everytime he went out he would end up breaking. Hahaha!
That's what ya get for having a Shivvy engine in a Challenger.

Highest rpm is 5000? That takes Tunnel Ram way out, and Single plane out in my book. I'd say dual plane here.

Sweet boat!

No quarter mile times here, you gotta have the big bucks for that! As far as the RPM's go brass hardware doesn't cut it above 5000. Your prop is like your diff, you change the pitch, you change your gears. Whats the RPM range for a tunnel ram? I have a Perfromer on it now. I bought it as a bare hull did a little work and went out all summer and didn't break down once, I even towed a new Bayliner in one time.

Tunnel ram is probably in its full groove from about 7500-10,000rpm. At most i'd run a single plane, however with not huge fat runners and a wide open plentum. The fat runners and big plentum lose velocity to the cylinders which makes the engine 'struggle' up to high rpm where that extra volume can be put to use. A dual plane uses both short and long style runners, a better match of volume vs velocity in the intake manifold. The long runners will keep velocity up to get you up and going, the shorter runners are more up to the higher rpms. I'd call a good dual plane out of steam about 6500rpm..
