383 or 440

Alright here's a question for everyone currently i have both.  The 440 is a complete 1972 long block (which is still in my 70 gran coupe) and the 383 is a 1968 hp also complete long block (picked it up cheap a few years back).  My debate is im looking a doing a stroker motor build this comming spring but which should i build?  The 440 has some aftermarket stuff on it from when it was built in the earily 90's like a 509 purple shaft cam, the heads where ported (a mild port job nothing crazy) the good ole eddy torker II intake ect.......(and pretty much everything is completely outdated)  OR start fresh with the 383 untouched the old guy i got it from claimed it only has 27,000 on the block(he ended up pulling it outta the car during the restoration and changed it to a 440)  The car is gonna be a steet/strip car nothing crazy but a weekend warrior.  Any thoughts?  Ive been looking at the 440 source kits and their prob. who i'll go through.

Man that seems like such a personal opinion question...

I mean I was looking to build a 383 OR a 440, but starting from scratch with either.  I went for the 440 just 'cause it'll make power easier for the same amount of money...

I think if you're looking for "nothing crazy," then why not just update the 440 with a few new parts - maybe the cam, maybe a bit more porting on the heads, and be done with it...  The 383 is starting from scratch - at least the 440 is close.

But in the end man it's your call.  What is this going to go into?  Or did I miss that somewhere else?

If everything is equal in your eyes, I'd say stroke the 440.

I think I'd just update the 440 and not worry about strokin' it.

its going into my 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe its my old bracket car from the earily 90's that im gonna go through hang some new sheet metal and do a repaint and redo the interior.  Right now i've got a set of 4.30's in the car but also have several different ratio's laying around like 3.91's, 3.55's 3.23's and even the 2.73's.  I also have a set of hooker super comp 1 7/8 headers and a TTI exaust (2 1/2) and flowmaster 40's as far as ign. i was thinking just keeping the factory ele. ign from mopar(its seemed to work great since i did the swap back in 1991) and as far as my goals i'll be happy with low 12's in the 1/4 and if i could do it on pump that would be great.  500 hp would be nice but im a realist and 450 would prob be a more down to earth guess.  Not sure if im gonna go roller cam or stay with hyd.  The car has been lightened a lil bit it has fiberglass front clip the tranny is all built with hayes clutches 3500 stall and full man. valve body.

thats an idea but the cost on stroker kits are so affordable nowadays thats got me pondering might as well...........

the 512 sounds good is there a website or source for doing the 512?  is indexing the block nessary? im also thinking about those new alum. heads from 440 source......... im gonna do some looking into doing one thx

i called 440 source and got all the info i wanted to know............hell that 512 may be overkill on HP im only looking to put down 475-500 but aleast i know what all is nessary for the build
