Installing Backup/Neutral safety switch.

Didn't see any discussion on this topic  , so  My backup light stays on all time while in gear, forward and reverse.  She will also start in gear!!!  (Automatic).    I bought a new switch and have been under the car.  Is there a special way to remove the 3 pin cap.??  I know I also have to unscrew the old switch so how much fluid will escape before I can get the new one in?   May seem like simple questions but I don't want to mess up now.  Almost ready for tags................... ....

Wiggle the connector slightly while pulling back, its just pushed on there. I'd recommend jacking up (and supporting) the drivers side only of the car, to help the atf stay twords the passenger side to keep fluid loss to a minimum.

you may have a mismatch between the the lever inside the tranny & the switch , still try changing it but if the light still stays on you may need to go inside the tranny to change the shift Comb to work with the switch
 you will lose a couple of qts of fluid

Well I changed the switch.   Didn't lose any fluid as I did jackup the drivers side , thanks,.   But the light does the same thing.   On in reverse and off in neurtal but back on when in forward gears.  I might just remove the bulb for now..............still have some loose ends to tie up such as heater lines and such.   It is cold in NC now........

Have you tried to see if it starts in gear,  Be careful if it does start.  Foot on brake while cranking if it cranks.  Just wondering if the switch is going in to the gearbox too much and weather you need to put another gasket on it to space it out.    Just a thought.

you may have the Comb from the earklier year trannys inside & it wil not work with the 3 pin NSS

I donl't think the transmission has been changed in the car but I am not sure.   The switch I removed had the 3 pins but the connector had a lot of fluid on it.  I cleaned it well.  I will inspect the wiring  as some of the covering did look like it had been warm at one time.................Thanks all...........still

Not long ago on another thread adding a second gasket was the solution to the problem.

CHECK IT WITH OUT THE PLUG ON THE TRANNY- COULD BE A SHORT/MELTED IN THE HARNESS!!

It does still crank in gear.   The light still comes on in reverse and forward gears...........Well...........the two black wires are fed into the bulkhead.  The center wire which is supposed to be  brown and yellow (which looks like it is) isn't hooked up to anything.  Wiring diagram says it goes to the starter relay.  I just have to figure which terminal.............

Try holding the switch in your hand and pushing the button in on thw switch and going through the motions.  You may have too thick of a washer for the switch to work.

Ok........I hooked the center wire to the ground terminal on the starter relay.  Cranks in park or neutral....and won't even click in reverse or any of the drives.  That part is great.....But the backup light still comes on in reverse  and in forward gears  .  Haven't tried the extra  washer yet.........still  .
