Reverse light woes
« on: February 10, 2004 - 01:11:22 PM »
Recentily swapped 904 to a 727 no problem there however...

Reverse lights come on and stay on

work in reverse (good thing)
go off in neutral (okay)
come on in drive 1st and second (not good)

Have replaced neutral safety switch as well as harness
replaced ignition switch and turn signal switch (if they matter in this)

Am stumped

Can't find a wiring diagram for car 74 cuda

HELP!!!! any and all constructive suggestions will be entertained.

What year tranny is the 727?
The valve body may be incompatable with the 3 prong switch

I`m not really an expert with Auto trannies , so unless you have 2 sticking switches or the valve body was swapped with the pre 67 one , I`m out if ideas

SOUNDS LIKE MAYBE SOME ONE HAS REWIRED THIS ONE.

the two outside pins of the switch is for the reverse lights. one wire should be colored black= 12 volts with the key on, the other should be a black wire with a white line(tracer) on it- this will go back to the rear reverse lights.

the centre is the grounding one for the start relay- only in park and neutral will this pin be grounded to the tranny case.
color=brown with a yellew tracer.

in the tranny is a lever that only engauges the two outside pins if it is in reverse. same for the neutral one.

so take the plug off and check the two outside pins with a ohm meter to see if it only engauges in reverse- get some one to help you move the gear level as you check it.

Hope this helps!!!!

2 more possibilities to check.  Do you have an aftermarket floor shifter?  If so, has the back up lead been run off of it?  2nd poss;  May be a piece of phenolic material in trans where switch screws in.  It seems I ran across both these things on vehicles I have worked on.   Ovmf

Just an update.

It was indeed the phenolic shoe inside the tranny. It had cracked in half and was grounding out. Quick call to Year One for a replacment fixed it.

Thx again for all suggestions
