You can run more than 4.5 backspacing on a 17" rim.

Yup, however it would have to be a custom size and was going to take a couple of months and was more expensive than off-the-shelf size.

Yes, all are on. Am running 275/40's up front, 315/35's in the rear. Wheels are TT2's 17x11 in the back with 7" BS, and 17x8 in the front with 4.75"BS, both being stock Mustang fitment. I did in fact have to trim some rear fender lip and wheel opening trim flange. I also put long studs on the rear and the Dr Diff rear disc kit did help rear fender clearance some.

Buying our new home and selling my old home have been the focus of my life for the past several months. However I have to pull the car out today anyway, will get some pics and clearance measurements for those that have PM'd me for details.

EDIT: See also this thread on the 275 fitment:

Wow thats great Mike,

Any other pics / info you could provide would be helpful as I would like to do somewthing similar. What size kit did you end up getting fopr the rear disc and how much room do you think you gained ? Was this essential to make this combo work ?
Also, what made you go with the 17x8 instead of the 9 ?
Was thinking of a wheels kit like this maybe for cheap and easy
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AFS-94-04-Mustang-BULLITT-Wheels-Tires-Polished-17X10-5_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742Q2em153Q2el1262QQcategoryZ66483QQihZ013QQitemZ230257939987

Do you think that in the rear you could go with maybe a 40 or 45 series and it would fit ?
After lowering you car the 3", does it "Hit" hard on the bumps ? I slammed my car using blocks and it hits pretty hard now, almost like there is no travel sometimes and that can be a bit annoying.
I am running stock bullit wheels now with 1" wheel adapters/spacers in place and am wondering if I could use this up front with the 9" wheels. I have had no issues at all in 4 years with the wheel adapters so I am a believer now :)

Thanx again for sharing your info and trials, it truely has been nice to read all this feedback for you and others on these various subjects.

BTW, Your car looks bad A$$ :)

Hello Mike,

The car looks HOT. I love the tire size, I'm also shooting for something in that ball park too. I'm hoping to run a 315/30/18 they are 25.5 inch's tall compared to your rear 25.7 inch tall setup. Up front I want to go with 245/40-18 which are 25.7 inch tall. It's a small difference and i don't think it will be vise-able.

So far I've purchased Dr. Diff's 1.0 inch spring relocation kit and picked up a B-body rear end. I'm told this combo should bolt right in. My question is do you think the 1.0 inch spring relocation kit will give you enough spring clearance to run the 315/30-18? For brakes I will be running 1997-2000 cobra disk brakes, front and back. I'm guessing I'm probably going to have to roll the rear fenders.
