Posting in threads over 120 days old
« on: January 20, 2008 - 08:06:33 PM »
Here's my question... If I want to add something to a post that applies to that topic BUT I get the red screen/warning that suggests starting a new topic what should I do? Start a new topic or just add to the old one. I remembered there was some discussion about "textured paint" and added info on some new stuff I'm trying and pics.

I always just post in the old one. Nothing wrong with it, only downfall is if it has photos, they will no longer be visible (unless hosted somewhere else by the poster). Doesn't hurt to do it. But I hardly go that far back in the archives. I'm guessing you completed a search? If it's your own question start a new one, if you were going to add 0.02c I would just post in the old one. I think I just made sense?

If I come across a post that I want to share my thought in I post in it, no matter when the post was last accessed.
It beats seeing the same thread started over, and over, and over.
Seems to be an issue were having at this time too, so I'm glad you brought this subject up  :2thumbs:

I would post in the old one if I had info to add.  That way when somebody searches for an answer to a question, more of the answers are in that thread instead if spread across a bunch of them.

My thoughts exactly. That's why I try and do a search first and see if something I need to know or add to has already been discussed. Maybe that "warning" is intimidating and that's why sometimes there's duplicate topics.

I know I've restarted a number of discussions for things like chosing cams, questions on heads, etc.  I usually always do a search though before hand, and sometimes I see similar threads or threads that were kinda hijacked either into my topic or from my topic, so that's when I start a new one.

I've also found threads that haven't been posted in for over FOUR YEARS - that's when I start new ones, because the parts people are discussing may not even exist anymore!

I have bumped a thread that was that old because I thought it was still a good one that could be responded to.  I had not seen it and did not think a new one needed to be made.  Some of the guys are new around here and may not go back and look at some of the old threads so bump them if you want.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I have gotten in the habit of using the search before posting a question because I have been on other forums where asking a question that had been covered would get you a CyberKick right in the jewels along with cries of "use the search".
Although it is still best to use the search before making somebody type out the same thing over and over, I am really glad this place is much more laid back and friendly.

Great point Carl, forgot about that, but yes, that is one downfall with the lack of photos   :walkaway:
I have been using www.multipics.net to host any photos I put up here for just that particular reason.
Seems to be working out ok so far, though sometimes they may take a few extra seconds to upload in a post.
To me the benefits outweigh the lost photo gig that eventually happens.
It really sucks when this happens in the members restoration section.
Some incredible info on film down the drain  :swear: :stomp:

Thanks!

Yup, I think we need a message saying if they want photos to last in here like for the FAQ section or stickied threads to host them else where so they remain visible for the best part of forever lol.  :2cents:
