Buying out of State
« on: January 21, 2008 - 01:47:47 PM »
What is the best way when buying out of State? I am buying a car and getting it piocked up and shipped to me.

How is the whole money thing handled? Will delivery companies present money at pick up? I am just trying to avoid sending a check and a car never show up.

Does anyone know of a brokage that I can send the money to to hold and once the car is picked up will release the funds?

Any feedback will help.
Thks,
Lee

First off, I hope you saw the car in person.  Never buy a car sight unseen.

Regarding payment, if you are not financing the car you can have a transporter take the check with them when they go to pick up the car.

If you are financing the car, your better financiers (JJ Best for example) have measures in place to avoid problems.  They get all title and insurance paperwork done before the money changes hand.  That way they don't get screwed, and thus you in turn don't get screwed.

Where's the car at?   And if you go to moparts.com , you will see a place on the site that has listings of shipper services.

i recently bought my challenger under similar circumstances.  in my case only 4 thousand dollars was involved if 40 thousand was involved i would have probably taken more preventive measures.  i bought mine based on pictures. it would have cost me 1000 dollars in lost wages and travel expenses to go look at it.  i made sure all communication with the seller was via email.  this leaves a paper trail.  i sent the seller a cashiers check for the purchase and he sent me the title before the car was ever picked up.  in the event of some sort of insurance claim or other mishap i wanted the car to be in my name when it happened.

my biggest issue at least from my standpoint was with the transporters.  you have to really pay attention to what youre getting.  in some cases your car with be moved with several different tow rigs and spend days in a terminal waiting for each leg in the journey.  alot of outfits will advertise " no deposit required " and make it sound like a good thing.  the only thing that does is give them the flexibility to not follow through on the service as promised.  when dealing with some of the smaller outfits youre going to probably get superior service in as much as you car is going to be picked up and put on a trailer and not taken off it till it arrives at your door.  the problem with these guys ( no deposit required ) is that if a more profitable job comes along they can bump you, or if they dont come up with another vehicle along the way the can bump you, or if they just dont feel like driving this weekend they can bump you etc.

if i was going to do a bigger dollar transaction under similar cirumstances i would retain a lawyer in the sellers hometown.  this is the 21st century a reasonably priced lawyer is only a google away.  for a few hundred dollars you can have the money change hands in an attorneys office.  send him the money and let the seller appear in his office with the documentation.

you should post where the car is maybe someone on this board is nearby and would be willing to help.

I flew to check out the car. Brought a bank check made out to the seller with me. The seller assisted in getting the car to transport. It was here the day after I got back!  I was so excited, didn't eat or sleep really for 5 days. :screwy: Diamond I think it was.Great transporters! I'll check. It's a bit of a hassle, but I'm as happy as ever. :burnout:

I grabbed my Dad, packed up a couple changes of clothes, gassed up the minivan. and headed out on the 13 hour drive(1 way).  Not only was I able to check out the car in person and crawl all over it, I could hear it run and drive it.  I signed the certified check and took the title along.  I found a local hauler who would haul my car and my car alone.  No warehousing, no monkey business.
My Dad and I got to reconnect a little bit, and it was an adventure neither of us will soon forget.

If something like that isn't possible, the next best thing might be finding a member who is close and willing to get a ton of photos and an unbiased opinion of the car.
