70 Challenger gas tank vent tube question
« on: January 21, 2008 - 06:29:18 PM »
The gas tank on my 70 Challenger has four tubes coming off near where the filler tube inserts into the tank. The vent riser thingy has five tubes coming off it. What does the fifth tube connect to, if anything? As I recall when I disassembled it, there were only four lines on it. Thanks.

I don't think you have a 70 gas tank.  :grinno:

My Challenger is a Calif. car and has the smog tank. I am really  not a 100% percent sure but I think the 5th hose is just a vent that goes nowhere. I would have to crawl under my car and to be sure but I think it just goes into the frame rail.

:iagree:
I haven't seen mine in so long I had to go take a look at it to make sure I did not have these.

Are you talking the ECS, (Evaporation Control System)?

If its anything like the later models it would connect to the carb. or fuel line (seen pics of filters w/extra vent tube) to vent the fumes from the tank.

I'm thinking a later year gas tank, but don't shoot me if I'm wrong.  Mine doesn't have this, but it isn't a California emissions car either.

The tank your describing is indeed a California style tank.  I cant remember where each line goes, but mine is identical to yours in your description.  I don know a seperate 3rd line comes back from the engine compartment area back to the tank.  Its a 5/16th and I believe it comes from the the breather cap that will have 3 vent openings instead of two.

:iagree:
One to the air cleaner, one to the back of the carb, and one to the breather itself going back into the crankcase.
The vent to the crankcase should also be at the highest point in the separator, and should have a small orifice, so it can minimize liquid fuel transfer to the crankcase.
