'65 516 heads on a '67 383?
« on: January 21, 2008 - 09:19:37 PM »
Hi guys, thanks for any advice!!!   :grinyes:

I picked up a '67 383.  Supposedly it is all stock, about 105k miles, not bored out, 2 barrel carb, out of a '67 Dodge Monaco.  It has no heads.

-Will these heads work on this engine?

-Does anyone know what heads came on this engine?  Were they 516s?  915s?  Any other head?

-What questions should I ask/what to inspect when looking at these heads.  What should I look for to see if they are cracked?

-Is $100 for them reasonable?  They need to be rebuilt due to them having 100k says the seller.

-If they go on a stock '67 383 2 barrel engine, what will the compression ratio end up being?  I ask because I heard 516s are closed chamber heads and will have higher compression?  10:1?  :clueless:  Will that work on super unleaded or will I get pinging?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!   Sorry for all the questions!!!!

100 bucks is about normal. Your 67 383 probably came with 516's when new.  Put some .042 felpro hd gaskets on it and it will live on 91 octane easy enough. But you will need hardend exhaust seats if your planning on driving it alot.

Cool!  Thanks for the tips, Alan!

I might end up getting these.  The higher compression from being closed chamber heads made me think twice about them but I figure if I go with stock pistons and get the open chamber heads the compression would drop and subsequently the HP.

915s I beleive are the same head but with the bigger exhaust valve but I figure they may cost more money and these might do the job.

Thanks again!  :)

I thought we could get by without hardened exhaust seats due to not driving at high rpms? When I had my 915 worked, I was told that.

If you put miles on old heads without hardend seats, they will eventually sink. 20k miles or less and they start sinking . 915 heads flow better than 516 heads, but you'll be ok

Hmmm...just curious, if a set of 516 heads normally go for $100, what would a set of 915 heads run me?  :clueless:  I figure they are more due to the bigger exhaust valve, but how much more do you think?

Thanks!!!!

You might get lucky and get a set for 4 or 5 hundred bucks. And all 915's didnt come with larger valves. Sometimes they were 208 160's too

I got a decent set of 516's earlier this year with the plan of having larger valves and bronze guides installed. Cant you just hog them out to 2.14/1.81 size and do the porting template thing? I figured it would be an easy thing to do and when all is said and done they would not be much more than a set of 915's only they would already have good valves, seats, guides and springs.   :dunno:

:faint:  Ok, the price alone has helped me make up my mind since I'm not a big player when it comes to spending money that I don't have!  :roflsmiley:

Thanks again,  Alan!  I might just go check out those 516s for sale.  ;)

I do remember that you had mentioned the spring cleaning in another thread, which is awfully kind of you!

Yeah, too bad I wasn't closer, but I appreciate the thought!   906 heads are nice!

If you click on to 440source and have a look at the cylinder heads. They have a whole range of different heads with prices attched.  The 915's are the most expensive cast iron heads they have.  :dunno:

Sounds good, Chryco!

I was thinking that if I had the choice between the 516 vs other open chamber heads, that the 516s have the same design as the 915s and the 915s supposedly from what I read have a better design (Forgot why...  :banghead: ) than the open chamber heads,  I can pick these 516s up for now and figure out the bigger valve situation later if I get serious about this.

Thanks!
