With that combo you have i am geossing it has about 9.0:1 compression and pumping out around the 340-350 HP.  If you where to change nothing but the pistons and bring the compression up to 13.5:1 this will give you something in the range of 420-430 HP.  But more compression yeilds for a lot more to be done on other parts.

A new cam with more compression and a suitable converter will get you pointed in the right direction. :2thumbs:

Not sure what the cam profile is that CP recommended, any chance you could tell us the grind CP old buddy. :clapping:

last time i checked the compression i believe it was around 170 to 180 psi, but im not 100% sure on that. I will check it on saturday when i get back home. Now on that cam should i get the heads flow tested to before i pick out a new cam?

he may have low compression , a 340 with 8:1 is a dog & it has been rebuilt , a good cam like this can help build a lot of cylinder pressure & fool the engine into thinking it has more compression than it does & will wake it up . I did a 7.8:1 383 a few years back & we ported the heads & installed a Small engle cam &  it became a whole different engine , if he is as low as 8:1 compression the K54 would be a better choice

not entirely nessisary to flow test the heads , , most production heads don`t flow great , the best upgrade would be to use the 308 swirl truck heads instead of what you have if you are going to pull the heads & the 308 heads respond well top porting & made 41 RWHP [61 gross HP] gain over X heads on a 340 I worked on

What you will need to do if you do pull off a head is to pick a piston any piston and put the piston up to the very top of its cylinder.  Now measure with some verniers how far down the bore the piston is and tell us if the piston is flat or dished or better yet take a photo with a digital camera and post it so we can see it.  We then can give you better direction on what needs doing. :2thumbs:

So the cam you mentioned before would work just fine with the heads i have now even though they have been ported, polished, and had the larger valves put in? i will end up taking the heads off since i have a bad knock on the passenger side that sounds like a stuck lifter, then i can really find out what the compression ratio is.

:iagree: This might be a dumb question, but did the noise just recently start?  Could it be something that was on its way to going bad, and that is what was sapping power?

Holy crap..................... :scared:
What is going on....................... :22yikes:
The more we get involved the deeper the hole seems to be getting. :faint:

Hope everything works out, find that noise and refreshen that little 340 wedge. :jumping:

Here's another one I've been kinda kicking around along with the K54, that is if I just swap out my cam and not just go through the motor on my low compression 73 340. The RPM range seems a little wider on this one. Anyone run one of these cams in a low compression motor?

the VooDoos are a goiod cam as well & actually have similar specs to the Engles . I would probably go 1 step bigger in most cases

depends how low the compression is , if you know you are under 9:1 the one you listed will work better if you aare near 9:1 the K56 will work better
