Another Race Track Shutting Down
« on: January 22, 2008 - 09:03:09 AM »
Hi everyone

Race City Speedway in Calgary Alberta is being shut down

City officials want to build some storm management system on the land even though the track was suppose to have a lease until 2025...now they have been told the lease ends in 2010

Major planning and time is what it will take to relocate and rebuild the track but it seems there is no interest coming from the city.

Losing another race track effects not just those interested in racing and building cars but will also have a negative effect on business' that cater to the racing community
There have been many tracks through out the US that have also suffered the same

Here is a link to an article that was in the Calgary paper...only one alderman is willing to add his voice up to now

http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/Alberta/2008/01/14/4772786.html

An online petition has been set up and am asking if you would help out by adding your name. There are also many paper petitions located at related places of business and also will be available at upcoming car shows. They will then present the signatures to the city

Thank you for your time and signature

Hi Hannah,

Wonder how they will feel hearing from an Aussie about the track.   How long have you been going to this track ?  And did you get that Mopar you were looking at ?

Well we get a lot of tourists up here so don't think it would seem unusual...a lot of people from the States that race up here have already signed it :)

I've been going to tracks since I was little with my parents. There are a few tracks that I go to all summer...as soon as the track opens for the season I am gone and you won't find me at home until all the tracks close in the fall !!

No that Charger has not been "gifted" to me yet  :smilielol:

Thank you!!

Well sure we have our problems up here but I don't think any worse than anywhere else...we have the police involved at the track...it's a program incorporated at many tracks world wide and everyone would love to be able to say they beat the police at the track

Buy yes obviously the fewer tracks to race at are going to cause more racing on the streets...that's a problem that many don't understand

Thank you !!

Bummer...   :walkaway:  We need more tracks for folks to challenge each other on instead of less....      :burnout:    :cooldancing:

Exactly Oldschool if those who are against the tracks would just spend an evening at one they'd see what it is all about and why it is a passion for so many

Fire breathing...wheel screaching...loud fast cars...and admission is pretty affordable even for a family...it beats a night at the mall that's for sure

It's kind of like fighting rock n roll....you can try but fast cars are a fact of life !!

Thank you !!

I have hauled my car down there to race, I had a good time and it will be sad to see the track go. Would not a private track be built to replace the existing one? In a year or so Rimby will have its track ready, its not to far away from Calgary.

That is what I thought when I read this.  They did that here. They closed the tracks and gripped about street racing and car guys (people) hanging out at the beach.

Years ago they ripped out the Fremont raceway back in the early 80's. They had plans to build on it.

Then they had to do surveys on the soil and take samples.
It turned out the soil was too contaminated to build on.
Now it just sits as an empty field where it once stood.

Stupid buracrats!!

All the gear heads up here thank you for your support !! Appreciate it !!

Well that's just it...the government doesn't care and no effort much less discussion has been made for relocation...that's pretty much what the petition is about...instead of saving Race City in its current locale. But to rebuild and start anew somewhere else.

Also the tracks that are still open will feel this loss as well...many cars do the drag circuit so to speak and Calgary not having a track to go to is kind of like a hole in the circuit and many may not make the trip at all because of it

Pretty sad a big city like Calgary losing a race track when a small town like Rimbey has the backing of their mayor and the provincial government gave $400,000 towards the track...

Come on up and honor us at Castrol Raceway...would love to see your car in action !!

Thank you for reading !!

This is partially true...yes street racing may increase some...accidents...deaths etc but also this was not just a street legal track...and a lot of people that use tracks anywhere here in the province have karts or bikes or race stock or...cars that don't even make it to the city streets. What about them?

Thank you for your reply !!

Yah it doesn't make much sense does it...when you travel to other places and you see big empty areas and people tell you "yah this once was a great drag strip"

A great one here got closed because people started building near the area...knowing it was near a race track and then starting complaining about the noise  :screwy:

Thank you !!

Geez another one

"Spokane Raceway Park will be sold at public auction within 90 days, capping a five-year legal fight by more than 500 limited partners who say they’ve seen no return on investments they made to build the facility in the early 1970s.
The auction was approved today by Superior Court Judge Robert Austin, who granted an order submitted by court-appointed receiver Barry W. Davidson to hire J.P. King Auction Co. Inc., of Gadsden, Ala. The firm will market the 600-acre site nationwide and sell it at public auction by April 13."

Here is some good news for you hannah, closer to you than me.

Province provides $430,000 for Central Alberta Raceways expansion

Rimbey benefitting from Major Community Facilities Program

Rimbey... The Alberta government is contributing $430,000 to the expansion of the Central Alberta Raceways at the Rimbey Kinsmen Motorsports Park.

Started in 2003, Central Alberta Raceways hosts a number of racing events each year and attracts over 15,000 racers and racing fans from across the province and Western Canada.

“Whether it’s on the snow or on the track, racing is a sport enjoyed by Albertans all year round,” said Hector Goudreau, Minister of Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture.  “We are pleased to support a project that will provide thrills and excitement for local spectators and visitors from around the world.”

The $430,000 grant will go towards the expansion of the racing venue and construction of a new paved track.  The total project cost is an estimated $869,000 and is part of a long range development plan to make the Rimbey Motorsports Park a premier multi-motor sport racing venue in Western Canada.

Funds for the expansion are being provided as part of the Alberta government’s Major Community Facilities Program. This two-year, $280-million lottery-funded program, helps municipalities, not-for-profit organizations and Aboriginal communities plan, upgrade or build major public-use facilities that enhance community life.

“This new track is estimated to be one of the longest paved drag racing tracks in Alberta,” said Ray Prins, MLA for Lacombe-Ponoka.  “We hope this expansion will help draw more than double the number of people that come to the Raceways each year.”

Jeff Makofka, President of the Rimbey Kinsmen Club added, “Our community project has come a long way and we will now be able to get into the next gear.  The community support has been outstanding and with these new funds we can proceed with the completion of a new drag strip for Alberta.”

Supporting community organizations and investing in infrastructure are part of Premier Ed Stelmach’s plan to secure Alberta’s future by building communities, greening our growth and creating opportunity.
