Hemi test-holy crap

Watched American Muscle car last night..they tested all stock engines:
Ford 427-600+hp
Chevy 427 500+hp
Pontiac 401-high 400 hp
Chevy 409 500hp
STOCK 426 HEMI 820 HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :22yikes[/font]:

That was not stock - it was a ringer.  It's been discussed here before.

I watched american muscle last night too and I want one of the 820 hp Hemi engines dropped in my 70 Cuda. What a handful that would be!!

 Wonder why they didn't reedited that show. Just think how many Ford and GM guys are whining about it. Must be the Hemi's clout.

 The best "guesstimate" of the true output of the Hemis from back in the day was somewhere between 475-525 HP, depending on who wrenched it from the factory.  An average was 500 HP.   This was usually confirmed by vehicle weight and 1/4 mile figures.  800+ would be nice for sure.....    :burnout:     :cheers:

The best "guesstimate" of the true output of the Hemis from back in the day was somewhere between 475-525 HP, depending on who wrenched it from the factory.  An average was 500 HP.   This was usually confirmed by vehicle weight and 1/4 mile figures.  800+ would be nice for sure.....    :burnout:     :cheers:

This was widely discussd on Pro-Tourin.com. They are mostly Chevy boys there, thy're all in a tizzy!

I think the figures are a little false myself.

I saw that show about three months ago. They said that it was stock. What was the most likely mods to the engine to get the numbers? Some of you experts can tell by the sound the engine made from the show.

Funny they didnt mentiong the Pontiac SD 455.  I always grew up hearing that the Hemi really had about 550hp not like 800hp???  Stock that is.

I forgot to mention this when this show came on about a month ago. I was blown away by those numbers. Like Cuda Guy, I was wondering why they didn't do the Buick 455 or the LS6 454. What in the world did they do to that hemi to get those kind of numbers?

Back in july 93 mopar muscle mag did a stock hemi build (street hemi 1970 specs) on the dyno it made 424.1 hp and 448.1 ft.lb. tq. and a couple of years ago legendary motors cars did a stock hemi build for the purple chall. they were restoring and it made the same #s.....

I had the pleasure of racing one of those back in the day.  It was in a white Firebird and I was running my '68 Hemi Runner.  Both cars were stock down to the exhaust manifolds.  I was even still running the dual point dizzy in the Hemi...lol  I had not owned the Runner long enough to get familiar with the best way to launch it.  BTW--it was a 727 auto on the column with 3.91 gears and polyglass GT's.  Anyway, we ran em from a dig.  I bogged the Hemi off the line and the 455 SD pulled out about a car length or so.  Stayed about the same when we hit second.  About halfway through second, the deep breathing Hemi started to make it's move.  I started reeling him in and by the time we crossed the finish line, I had him by 1-1/2 to 2 cars. It was fun.  I had owned a pretty quick 340 Dart until I got the Hemi.  If I had been in the Dart and he jumped me like that, I would have been toast.  One of our members here that doesn't log in very much (Mobear) was a witness to that race.  I learned that night that the Hemi's are very tough on the big end.  If you can launch them side-by-side with other cars, you will drive away on the big end....    :burnout:   :cooldancing:
