Not really sure where to put this since it will probably end up relating more with the new Challengers coming out.... but what can anyone tell me about Methane Injection?

I understand the basics... It would probably be active in a "boosted" system and the methane spray would begin when boost kicks in providing power and engine cooling...

Thats all I know about it and if anyone knows anything about this newer age stuff feel free to explain it all to me... Just something I'm hoping to learn a bit about.

Methanol, not methane. Methane is what comes out your butt after a burrito dinner from Taco Bell. Methanol is a from of alcohol.

Alcohol injection is starting to see a rise in popularity again. It had some interest in the mid 70s when octane ratings started to drop and was a means to keep high compression engines out of detonation. Now it is gaining popularity again because of the popularity of boosted applications that generate a lot of heat.

It works because of two factors, the higher base octane rating and the tendancy to be cooler than gasoline and hence reduce inlet charge tempratures. however, alcohol and alcohol blends tend to burn hotter than gasoline and your exhaust temps go up.

Hooking it up can be done as simply as a tank with the alcohol and a vacuum line hooked to a carb, think of something like a windshiled washer set up going to the carb. More involved kits will use a pump that can be triggered via a micro switch attached to the carb linkage to it is more automaticly used at WOT, like nitrous. The most complex systems will be plumbed in using multiple sensors, like late model engines, to detect heat, load, throttle position, etc.

Ha well methane is combustable... You could always put a cow in your gas tank couldn't you?

Thanks for clearing that one up for me before I went around looking dumb in public...

Is it worth much with a simple N/A engine or will you only get any real use out of it with boosted cars?

I also saw somewhere that it can be really helpful in maintaining tq. on the high end and if tuned correctly it can provide that extra tq. on the low end that you lose with larger turbos and turbo lag. Is there any truth to that?

I've always been under the impression methanol injection does help out quite a bit with higher boosted applications with turbochargers.  my initial thought was it helped to begin spooling the turbos compressor wheel faster, but that's not necessarily true.  Yes, it is injected into the induction system (not sure if it can plumbed pre-turbo or post-turbo as I haven't really looked into it too much), but it's really just to help with the low end power until the turbo gets into it's operating zone.  As for any gains on an N/A car, if it's been used in the past I'm sure it could be a worthy addition to get some extra hp relatively cheap.  As HP2 mentioned, many people running meth. injection use the windshield washer reservoir as the reserve tank and can do it quite cheaply: not to mention it's virtually unnoticeable to many. :2thumbs:
