trunk carpet and detailing?
« on: January 27, 2008 - 02:01:08 PM »
I know there have seen some posts on trunk detailing and maybe this would fit better in the interior forum? I want to make a removable carpet liner for my trunk. Would like to find the same black OEM style carpet material as is in the car, (black loop)  Where can I buy that stuff in bulk? I plan to take my repro mat and use it as a pattern, then have an interior shop stitch in back quilting and spiral stitch edge.

I'd think twice about trunk carpet
Carpet in trunk + moisture = rust

It's ultra hard to keep humidity out of your trunk area and eventually will cause mildew, mold and rust...  Are you sure about this?

yeah, I know what you mean. This isnt glue-in permanent, its an alternative to the hounds tooth repro mat and will give a nice finishing touch as well as a sound deadener.  I cant bring myself to line it with Dynamat like I did the rest of the car. Too much blood sweat and tears went into the new trunk floors and extensions.

I have lined the back seat panel with black carpet where I mounted an Alpine amp. Also, have stashed an Infinity Basslink subwoofer under the LH quarter panel. A nice fitting removable black throw-carpet would tie it all together. Would probably affix it with  velcro pads or something.

When I first saw the factory trunk mat it lasted like 15 minutes before it was put on Trade-Me (our eBay) and sold. In our opinion it was rubbish and just looked tacky. I wanted a nice custom feel that could pass as factory to the untrained and more importantly was useful to a driving car. We decided to do a carpet mat that sits all the way around the center section of the trunk.

It's held in place by heavy duty push clips. The whole trunk area is carpeted right into every nook at cranny. The best part about having a clip in mat is I can remove it if it gets soaked as all water would run down that way, if I have wet gear etc I can un-clip the mat and hang it to dry. It's top grade carpet and well made, I love it. Just giving you another idea to work with.

that is sweet, very similar to what I am after but I want to be able to remove the whole thing. So the center snaps in, ver slick! How is the rest attached? Glued in or?

Thanks guys! It's glued in with some kind of interior/carpet installing glue "stuff" lol. The shop upholstery guy did it, it's yellow gunk lol. Oh, and that was the word I was looking for, not click, these buggers "snap" in firmly.

Not fancy, but easily replaceable, made this from a remnant in about 2 hrs. I am undecided as to have the edge bound. There is padding underneath to help drown out the exhaust noise also.

Looks alright to me mate! Have you thought about dying it black or body color that would look sweet!

Yes, it is quite a contrast. I don't know anything about using dyes though. Would one soak the carpet in a tub then just let it dry out? :dunno:

You're talking to the wrong guy my friend. I'm sure it would be something like that though, nothing too major, it would certainly set it off, not that it doesn't look good now but like you said, it is quite a contrast. I would go to a local auto store or better yet interior shop and see what they say to do.  :2cents:

The first thing I did with my Challenger was get rid of the trunk carpet, as the carpet was the cause of much of the rust in the trunk. Anything that gets wet and holds moisture against steel will cause it to start rusting, it's why floor pans are also usually so bad.

I understand wanting to carpet it, so pick one that can breath all the way through to promote drying. Anything with an impermeable backing is a bad idea.

Hey Mike.  :P

Another good idea would to be buy some non backed carpet of the color you want and glue it to the contures of the factory repo mat, this way it will hold its form and still be easily removed when wanted.

My factory mat is flat actually, and doesn't cover all the areas I would want. The carpet would be larger than the mat and would extend all the way up to the back seat. I think interior shops can do this with a steamer and even cut and/or stich in cleats that would make it conform to the layout. I now wonder if it wouldn't be better to have the trunk and inside done in newer, heavier carpet. My inside carpet is new repro open-loop style and is actually very thin. Wonder what that might cost??   :clueless:
