I need a 3rd Member Rebuild Kit Plz...

I've got am 8 & 3/4, 489 open 3rd member in my car now.  I recently purchased 3.91's for my car AND I just got a used 3rd member (741 case) with 3:23's and a suregrip carrier.  I was thinking of taking out my gears and carrier and putting in the 3:91's and the suregrip.  How hard is it?  Any special tools required?

I may be able to help out on a weekend. I've got a decent book. Changing the pumpkin is easy, gears are a can be trickey. Are the 741's crush sleeves behind the pinion, or which case were you going to use? i'm sure we can ask a few questions on this board and be able to figure it out. May need a harbor freight in/lb Beam torque wrench for setting turning torque. If i remember right the 489s are crush sleeves, and are kind of a pain to set pinion depth/preload?

I am going to stay with the 489 case...mainly b/c my gears (3.91's) are for that case.  I've got a tourque wrench from my transmission rebuilding days (thanks again big T  ) but not too sure about what else we weould need.  Maybe some more people will chime in with some insight to this project.

i have a dial indicator and a mag base. i really dont think you need much more than that. lmk, tactrans, can you lend a quick set of steps?

if you are just installing the sure grip I always take a reading of the backlash with a dial indicator Before disassembing it , but if you are swapping the pinion it is much harder to get the pinion set properly , generally you need a press to install the brg onto the  pinion  take a measurement then press the brg off & install the correct shims behind the pinion then re-install the brg onto the pinion

You will need a bearing puller/splitter to get the old bearings off. A nice trick is to buy an extra a new rear pinion bearing and have the inner race turned so it fits easily on the pinion gear for setting pinion depth adjustments,when you get it perfect(it has to be perfect) you then press the regular new bearing on permanently. You need a beam type inch pound torque wrench for setting rolling torque. I have a Mopar mag with the steps if I can locate ,I can scan it and post.

It's generally not an expensive job at a shop that specializes in diffs.  It's one of the job's I decided not to fiddle with but that's just me.  You might want to get an estimate before you go out and buy tools as  it's probably only 2 or 3 hours labor max.

Advanced Drive Line in Orlando will do it.  he said just bring him the 3rd member and other parts and he'll do it for $125.00 + parts.  So if I need bearings or anything else, I could be looking at $200 or so to have it done.  Sounds like a good deal, but I'm waiting on a call back from a few more shops.

Robert,one more thing also,you might have to get a different rear end yoke if the splines on your new pinion shaft is different than what you have already. (29 spline or 10 spline)

Well I think I found someone to do it for me.  The guy's pretty well known around here and all he does is rear ends so I think I am going with him.  I need a rebuild kit though for my 489 case, does anyone know where I can get a good one?

TTM, what's the difference between the one in the kit and the one you just showed me?  Is it worth the 30 bucks?  I just want to know for my own good.
