M46 found, Looking for numbers and tags
« on: January 28, 2008 - 08:44:12 PM »
Last weekend I found this barracuda for sale.  I was going to just purchase the fenders for my AAR since they are on a 70.  So I drive 3.5 hours pick up a friend and go look at the 70 barracuda parts I can buy.  When I arrive I notice from a distance that there is a black out package on the bottom of the barracuda.   My heart pounds very loud at this piont.  I immediately run over and look at the rear fender to see if it has holes for scoops.  Sure enough it does.  No scoops though!  I look the car over and tell the guiy what the car had originally. Pop the hood and there is no fender tag!  AAARRGGHHH!!!
I look for the dash and there is no dash and no vin tag.  NOOO!!  I ask if there is a build sheet and there is not one.  The person he purchased the car from gave him nothing except what is in the car.  The guy has had the car for a year and has never popped the trunk.  Yes!!  Maybe there will be some parts there.  Maybe the scoops!?  We cut the rope that the owner in Oregon had tied  the trunk lid down with.  Open it up and there is a bunch of trim.  Probably all the exterior trim any way.  Sitting there is a pair of scoops.  They didn't fall out of the gaping hole in the trunk all the way from Oregon.  Yes!!
I purchased them for nothing.  The car on the other hand, the owner wants way too much for.  I mean probably on the border line if it had the vin tag.  I want to save the car as it will be cloned into what else but a 71 cuda.  The guy has a real hemi orange 340 cuda in the garage by the way.  I have recieved all the contact info that the guy has, phone number, address, ebay user name, email.  I have repeatedly tried to contact the person through these means and I have failed.  This is driving me crazy.  The car is straight as can be.  Looks to have original paint.  Of which it doesn't have the reflective red and white or white and blue strip that goes between the blackout and the body color. The paint looks to be original.  I have not heard of the stripe being able to be deleted.   Sure do wish I had that fender tag.  I am really hoping that someone sees this and knows of the fender tag.  On the drivers door is the original sticker from the factory. 318 car.   Vin sequence number is there though.  If anyone knows of these numbers or can help I sure would be appreciative.  Does anyone reading this live in Oregon around Banks, Oregon.  Sure would like to get someone to take a short drive and ask the people in person if they have the fender tag.  They probably have other mopar parts.  This is a lot to say and I am wondering if anyone has anything to say back.  thanks guys!!

Wow 'cuda hunter, great find!!!  I can't believe you fell upon a set of M46 side scoops! Way to go, that is definately a needle in a haystack find.   :2thumbs:

I"m confused, who are you trying to get ahold of? Didn't you speak with the owner of the car when you got the scoops? Or have you had problems trying to reach him since. Any pictures of the 340 car?

Sorry, the current owner I am in contact with.  He purchased it about a year ago and the people he purchased it from are the people I am trying to contact.  The current owner gave me the information of the previous owners. I do have a pic or two of the 71.  It is in complete project form.  I am trying to purchase the original fenders off of the car as he has a different set that are already primed.  These are the only pics I took as I was far more interested in the M46 car.

Excellent Josh...Great score :2thumbs:  Did you notice if any grill pieces were anywhere as to the color?  How about the rear quarter chrome and decklid chrome?    Car came from the LA plant.   We can see if Barry has that vin# down also.  You did good

Man, I was hoping so much you (Barry) would have the number.  My luck I guess.

I have heard as many as 400 M46's were made.  Some here speculate less.  Everytime I look on ebay or any other site I am a member of I think of the NOS pair I am going to buy!!  If I could ever find them.

I can purchase all the trim and the front fenders and hood including the grill.  The car is going to be converted and he doesn't want any of that stuff.  He really wants to sale the car as he has just decreased his inventory from something like 30 cars to what I saw, around 5 or 6.
He has told me to hold on to thought of purchasing the parts as someone might step up and buy the whole car.  In that event I am sure that most anyone is going to weld in the holes and make it like a regular barracuda.
The vin has to be out there somewhere and I am sure that I can at least try to find it.  Without any tags the car is almost worthless to me.  Too much hassle it seems.  Especially without the fender tag to at least show the M46.

Looks like a nice find for us m46 barracuda owners.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I actually just received contact from the previous owner.  He purchased the car 20 years ago in Oregon from a fellow mechanic of which he only knew by first name basis, lets call him Richard.  So Richard got the car from his dad because his dad hadn't paid taxes in 15 years and the irs finally caught up with richards dad.  Richard and his dad then decided to make the car a race car and removed all the tags from the car.  The also stripped as much as they could from the car to prep it for light weight racing.  Then Richard had the car in a garage he was renting and had to move out and couldn't keep the car because the irs had at that point caught up to Richard.  Must run in the family.
Any way the guy who purchased it from Richard , his name is Joe, only got a bill of sale and all the parts that are in the car.  All the parts in the trunk you see have been there since the car was stripped in 1985.  Now Joe who had purchased the car from Richard 20 years ago never even opened the trunk and saw the scoops.  So the current owner, Rob, had never looked either.  I was the first person to open the trunk since 1988 or something like that.
Any way, the guy Joe has said that he and his wife will definitely look for the old bill of sale so that I can contact the previous owner, Richard, to see if he has retained the vin or fender tag for a book mark or something.
Now that was kind of confusing.
I did purchase the scoops for pretty much nothing compared to the current market of not being able to find a set. And you know how that goes, as soon as you can't find something, the people who have them want as much for them as the wealthiest can afford.

BPchallenger,   We would love to see pics of the EF8 car that you have.  I havn't seen one in that color yet.
I can't find my book, that is green right?
