Elelbrock performer nos on 340?
« on: January 28, 2008 - 10:27:07 PM »
I am thinking seriously about putting on a performer nos from edelbrock. Will the stock bottom end hold up? 73 340 with headers and 600 carb. Also, what exactly is the stock intake called on this car? Is has the four holes of unequal size with a slot connecting them. thanks

It is called a spreadbore intake. Do you mean a Performer RPM??

some the early square bore intakes have just slightly smaller primary ports without being a speadbore style as well

You are getting a 'wet' kit correct? You'll need to adjust timing before you spray.

I don't know much about NOS but do you guys think the stock bottom end on a 340 is ok with a cast crank?  Is that a consideration when choosing how much NOS you're going to put in an engine???  :dunno:

Mikerallye, are you changing the intake to an Edelbrock performer manifold?  FYI four equal sized holes is a square bore manifold vs the speadbore that the guys previously mentioned.

I think he is talking about a "Edelbrock Performer Nitrous Kit"....not the intake...

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=EDL%2D70001&N=700+115&autoview=sku

Just my understanding. And yes, the bottom end does have a big part to play in how much you can run. The tune dictates about the same. You go lean, and detonate, you'll break anything. You stay nice healthy tune, good wet shot, i wouldn't hesitate spraying my cast piston 318 a good 100hp shot. Now however, i wouldn't lose sleep if it let go...its been through hell already. lol

When i refer to a "wet kit" i refer to a Nitrous + Fuel "shot". A "dry shot" is just that, only Nitrous, no added fuel.

A dry shot, you either have to be running really rich 'off the bottle', or a small shot on a fuel injected car to be 'safe'. Since you have no added fuel with nitrous, your chances of going lean rise quickly.

A wet shot is safer on carb'd applications. The added fuel with nitrous actually will hold the same a/f ratio as you have currently. As long as the fuel pressure is there. So theoretically with a good fuel system, wet kit, and a n/a WOT tune of 12.5:1 ~ 13:1, you can spray it and still stay in that 'safe' range. Also have a hearty ignition.

I don't think I would go over a 100hp shot and make sure your fuel pressure does not drop below 5psi, 7 psi would be even better that way there is no chance of leaning it out. Make sure you have some pretty good RPM before spraying it as well.

The stock bottom end will hold 100HP if it is in good shape.  I would start at 50 and go up from there. You do not need RPM before you hit the button, if you have it tuned right,it will launch like a rocket out of the hole. A fuel pressure safety cut off switch is a good investment too. Run higher octane fuel also (100 octane) for a detonation preventive. A fuel pressure regulator is needed if the kit does not come with one, so you can change your mixture.

This kit is cheaper and works well also. You might want smaller jets to start out lower in the HP range than this kit has. Not sure if it fits a spread bore carb though (or the Edelbrock one either)

For NOS I seen its best not to use a dual plane intake. With a dual plane a few cylinders will be too lean. A Holley Street Dominator-single plane is good. I ran one and they work pretty darn good even at low rpms.

Sorry, my comment was made after seeing 2 guys start spraying off the line. There was a bang and pieces of piston laying on the ground . :dunno:

When I did mine,I purged the system thru the engine in the burnout box, staged the car and and hit the button on the last yellow and away I went. It pulled the left front tire about 6-8 inches off the ground and the passenger side one was still on the pavemant!  :22yikes:  You can see it in the video I posted in the burnout section if you watch closely.
