Something Pretty Amazing
« on: January 30, 2008 - 03:20:15 AM »
I was just watching Speed Channel Super Bikes, and a guy on a stock looking (I'm sure it was turbo'd) Suzuki Hayabusa did 241 mph at Bonneville Salt Flats. The bike was squirming all around while at that speed.  That guy has some serious kahounas.  That is FAST! for a stock appearing bike. Just tucked in behind the windshield, and held on! Imagine what it would take to build your car to go 241 mph! And I think he has gone over 250 mph before on the same bike.

72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

1000 Horses, 6 Gears and...

6 Bottles of Whiskey
 :drunk:

I would think it would take more than 1000 hp to get a 3500 pound mostly stock car to 241 mph.

Shoooot - that'd blow your last few remaining hairs off.  :)

"Boosa's" - as they're commonly referred to by idiots who don't have bikes but love to talk about 'em - are a highly revered cycle...  I remember listening to kids yammer on about them endlessly at WyoTech - none of them had or had ever had motorcycles.  I got to the point that I hated the damned things just 'cause I heard about them so much.

Irregardless, they are extremely fast, and made as such from the factory.  They're expensive as far as bikes go, but still not as bad as a new, well-equipped car.

That's definitely some crazy speeds for a 'Busa. (lol Jeff...Don't worry; I'm a rider & hopefully soon to be CBR Fireblade owner. ;))  As for top-end speed, my car's pretty much set to hit low 200's with it's crazy gearing, but the engine cuts out around 160-ish (need some crazy big turbos & I'd be ready to roll around 200 mph.)

I had a "crotch rocket", American V-twin Buell, and never had the desire to go over 100. I just don't think it's a good idea on any two wheeled machine. I am more into the twisties. My dream is to ride the "Tail of the Dragon" and the Blue Ridge Parkway in TN. Something like 300 turns in 13 miles? No hundred mile an hour stints there and probably the funnest stretch of road in the US.
Of coarse I have to wait to get another till the Cuda's done!

I know they're not Mopars, but as a motorhead I have to respect them! I use to have a Ninja, and to tuck behind the windshield and go WOT is quite the adrenaline trip! Now that I'm older, I'm more comfortable (and alive) on 4 wheels. The guy on the yellow bike bellow has gone 259 mph!

I remember an article about 12 years ago about a guy who took an 89 or so Camaro, and placed the shell of the car on a basically NASCAR frame, suspension, and engine. The article claimed the guy was clocked at over 250 mph on the southern US highways on a regular basis, and use to embarrass a lot of Porches. Anyone know that guy?

The problem with clocking up any mph numbers over 180 in a stock bodied car is their tendancy to get real light in the nose and the large amounts of horsepower it takes to push a brick through the air at those speeds. Talk about moving over 220-230 mph, and the power requirements become HUGE and handling becomes a nightmare. A lot of full bodied Bonneville cars weigh 4500-5000 pounds just to keep them on the ground.

Seems you could overcome that with proper aerodynamic mods like spoilers and stuff. My Cuda gets light in the nose at high speeds, so I built a 5 inch front spoiler and it calmed things down a lot! The wing cars in NASCAR in 1970 were going over 200 mph.
