RPM and stall speed @ 60mph
« on: February 01, 2008 - 01:49:55 AM »

Hello,

I am still trying to work out how mild/wild I want my 'Cuda to be once it is back from getting painted and have a question about stall speeds. I was planning on running a overdrive to keep rpms down on the highway. If I have a 4000 stall converter and my rpm @ 60 is only 2500rpm, will this end up frying my converter/box? I want a quick street/strip car but am concerned about the implications of having a high stall ( 4000 or so ) for street driving when I wouldn't be going over 4000rpm that often.

thanks again

you will be replacing trannys regularly , the heat from slipping the converter constantly will kill them

Yup, with an o/d you cant have a stall higher than your cruise rpm. You'll heat things up quick, unless you have some kinda lockup trans that you can get a stall for

I'm running 3.91s .. so highway driving @ 2500-3000 with a 4000 stall is out of the question. How about non-highway driving with 30/40mph speed limits - even I went with a smaller 3200 stall it still would rarely be locked up. Would I still end up trashing my trans or is city/residential driving not so bad?

fwiw i run a 3500 footbrake, 3900rpm flash 9 1/2" dynamic. Through town and on the highway at about 65 or so. When i'm not 'on it' it acts pretty good. I do have a huge front cooler and a plate cooler in the fenderwell with a fan on it. Dont have a trans temp gauge, i do have a decent cooling system for it, no issues in about 2years driving it that way. It'd be better if i had trans temps to share, sorry to say i cant help there

Just a question... WHY do you have a 4000RPM stall converter?   :dunno:

I don't have one yet. I'm just weighing up my options on how to make my 'Cuda as fast as I can on the track while still being reliable on the street.

That's a fine line there your walking!   I would stay in the 3500 Stall range ,with the 3.91's you should be fine.
