What's This switch For?
« on: February 01, 2008 - 07:24:49 AM »
On my '70 Challenger on the dash there are 4 switches, upper left is the headlight, upper right the wiper switch, but what is the switch below the wiper switch? It is a toggle switch and doesn't appear to do anything? While I am inside the dash I will try to trace the wires but hoping that somebody can help me out.....?   :working:

  Thanks once again

Wally's right.

If the back of the switch's circuit board is red with three terminals and locks into the three positions it is a rear defogger switch. There will be a three conduction connection harness that ends at the kick panel. Then a black and black with white stripe two conductor harness connects and makes it way to the rear defogger motor.

The only other switch that went in that position was for the convertible power top switch that would reset to the center postion after moving up or down.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the prompt replies, I have a tin top so I don't think that will retract in a hurry and the rear window is clear.
This car spent most of its life in and around Las Vegas. It has factory air, only under the dash is still there though, at least it appears to be. I have been trying to find out any info about the vac. lines under the dash and the controls.
It's a great adventure tracking down and identifying components on a classic like the Challenger.

I will check out the back of the switch tomorrow and try to trace the wires however the wipers are a higher priority.

Dave,

The rear window never had a horizontal defroster element applied to the glass. The defogger motor mounted under the passenger side speaker location and vented through the center of the package tray with a trim bezel. See if any of that exists. If not, maybe someone changed the switch panel from the original 3 switch to a 4 switch along the way.

Thanks Slotts, no nothing in the back, I suppose you are right, somebody changed over to a 4 switch for other reasons.
