Drag Radials,which ones to buy?
« on: February 03, 2008 - 01:36:34 PM »
Almost time to buy some drag radials for the `cuda and since there are now a lot of chioces I need opinions on to which ones work the best.I will be primarily using them to drive to the track-10 minutes away- and race but want soemthing that isn`t too bad on the street if I get lazy and do`nt feel like taking them off some days.Milage isn`t too much of an issue as even if I left them on all the time it would only be 2-3000 miles a season and if they only last a season I`d be OK with that. What have you guys run and opinions on the track and street?

It has been my experience from hanging out with the street/strip racers here that there are two classes of DR.  The BFG and Nitto type tires are more Radial than Drag and don't perform on the strip nearly as well as the others.  The Hoosier and M/T type are more Drag than Radial and work very well at the track.  If it was my car and my money and I wanted to make sure I hooked when at the track, it would be Hoosier or M/T all the way....     :burnout:    :2thumbs:

:iagree:  I ran the M/T ET streets on my Dakota R/T at the track and they have a very soft sidewall that will even wrinkle like a slick at launch.  They are really soft too.  I drove a couple times to the track with them on and you need to remember to put lots of air back in them (versus at the track you can lower them back down), otherwise the tires will cause a little sway.

I've heard the BFGs and Nittos are much more streetable and can be run fine on a daily driver, but then they don't hook as well.  I think M/T has a drag radial available now as well.  That might be worth a shot?

I've heard the same thing too.

I went with BFG on my Aspen since it is going to start seeing some street time. I replaced a set of M/T ET slicks. I like the way they feel and look. They are much more solid on the top end of a pass than the old M/Ts and I dropped .2  off my e.t. with them too. I'd imagine the M/T radials would hook better and be faster if you are more race than street.

Agree with all the comments so far.  One thing that hasn't been said yet is that the MT and Hoosiers, when ran on the street, are so soft that they can tend to pick up little rocks and debrees from the road and sling 'em on your fenders.  Just a warning  ;)

I had ET streets on the `69 but drove it very little on the street.I also tried a borrowed set of Hoosiers non-radial and they stuck greaat at the track but were too soft and sticky(picking up rocks) for street driving.Sounds like the MT radials might be a good option.

I agree with Oldschool.  I have the Nitto's. Love them on the street. No problems in the rain or crusing at high speeds. They hook way better than my old TA Radial's.  At the track I can't get them to hook. They do last and last.  I have 30 runs and 12,000 miles on them so far.  Plenty of tread left for another season.

MT radials all the way if you want radials. If you want maximum street legal traction then the ET streets by far, but they drive exactly like slicks and are not any safer on the street, just legal. The radials MT came out with aout a year ago are great and really good for drag racing and street driving. Lifespan will be poor, but you will get 4-8 thousand miles out of them depending on the amount of burnouts. The Nitto and BFG are a longer lasting tire and hook pretty well. If I was racing a drag radial class it would be with the MT radials. The MT radials are outlawed at a few tracks here for the drag radial classes if that tells you anything about their unfair advantage!!

Street:

MT / Drag Radials
BFG Drag Radials
Nitto's 555R
MT ET Streets - Best Dry weather Traction - Bad all around tire
Hoosier Street slicks -  Best Dry weather Traction ... wear out quicker than et streets - bad all around tire

Strip:
