Anyone build/buy aftermarket dash?
« on: February 07, 2008 - 03:41:15 PM »
OK - after many years of use ( and some years of inactivity for others ) I'm thinking of
updating the dash with new gauges.
I like the Autometer Phantom series - 5" round speedo 5" round tach and 4 2-1/16" gauges ( fuel,volt,oil,water )

Has anyone purchased a dash, or attemted to build one?

I'm getting the bug to build 1, and with the tools at my disposal, I think it shouldn't be too hard.

Any thoughts, opinions or ideas would be great!

PS - I know it would be cheaper to refurb my existing ones, but looking to be different here.

When you said rebuild the dash, I thought you meant the WHOLE dash - a huge undertaking.

As far as a custom gauge setup, I haven't done it myself, but I would imagine that there might even be replacement panels availble online into which you could cut your own openings for surface-mount gauges.  If not, I also imagine using a simple template and some fiberglass wouldn't be too tough either.  Luckily contours on these old vehicles were pretty simple.

I've got a Rocky Mountain Dashes insert for mine also. No gauges yet. I've got the additional six gauge model because I want an air fuel ratio gauge (for EFI) and the final hole will either be fuel pressure or a clock. They sometimes runs sales. I think I paid about $550 for mine last spring.
