PC hardware advice???
« on: December 21, 2001 - 07:38:45 PM »
Helllllp!

Okay members! I need some advice here.

I wan't to buy a scanner, if I don't recieve one for Christmas!!

I just don't know what I need. I want to be able to upload/download (?) send pix to this site or others, but want good quality! I know scanners prices have dropped dramatically lately (or relatively here in Canada) but many have unrecognizable namebrands. I do not own a digital camera, but would like to send copies of 35mm photo prints.
What namebrand, etc. do you recommend? I have a 500 Mhz computer, 64 Mb, RAM? Windows 98, 56K modem and 17" monitor.

I also want to use it for personal art projects using adobe/photoshop software, but also perhaps Powerpoint slide presentations.  ;D

I am VERY out of touch with all this since being laid off a Geological Drafting career in '94. But we used Macintosh then.  :o  Macintosh was so much easier! IMHO.

Can anyone with Experience make Good Suggestions?  ??? OR point me in the right direction?

Thankyou in advance!! :)
WH

Just go for a good brand like HP or Canon and you should be ok. Have the guy at your local computer "super store" show you a few examples of what certain models look like in action and go from there. If you can get some $3.00 replacement insurance, do it! To replace those bulbs is SPENDY!! :o

I have a cheap no name scanner that worked great for the last 4 years. Usually with cheap hardware, if its going to mess up it usually does it in the first week or two, then you can return it.

One of the biggest mistakes that I see folks make up here is to buy the brand that isn't real popular.  A common problem with that is finding service for it if it ever needs repair.

Also, some brands tend to be proprietary ... IOW, you have to do things their way.

What brand of computer do you have?  If it's a Compaq Presario of certain years, installing a scanner can be trickier than with, say, a Dell.

And one thing that often hits people when they're installing a scanner:  Once everything is connected, be sure to shut down everything.  Turn the scanner on FIRST, then your computer.  Some scanners aren't detected unless they're on before the computer.  (In the old days, there were printers like that, too.)

LahTera's right about the tech support. If you buy a brand name one they will most likely support it in the future. My scanner became obsolete about 2 years with no drivers from the company and installing on windows me has not been fun. If you go to a big computer store like fry's electronics and you see the little  sticker that says refubished or returned and they knock off $5 stay clear away from those. Most of the time theres a reason people return things :o.

Wow!!!

Thanks everyone for the replies/advice!  :)
My computer was built by a friend. A Creative case,  Pentium III chip if I recall correctly. We mixed and matched stuff according to what I need and didn't need.

I will definately buy a brand name product!
BTW This not to say that my friend messed up on selection of computer parts, far from it! Just remembering bad times when I purchased car parts that were not brand name, just cheaper! I have experienced frustration from cheap knockoffs and swore I would only buy brand name quality parts, ever since!  8)

Thanks all!!!!!!!!!!

I actually recommend that people don't just go out and buy "all that stuff" computers.  We don't even really need P3 chips around here most of the time.  It's those high-graphic video games that require all that power, believe it or not.  ;)

Besides, I do the same thing your friend does.  You can get quality parts and build only what you need for a lot less, if you know who or where to go.  Not much different than dealing with Mopars on a low budget.  ;D

Except this year, Captain got some bucks for his engine.  Yes, indeed!   :o  My consolation is that I intend to hold him to his word about me racing it!!  ;D ;D

Good luck and Happy Holidays!

I didn't get a scanner, so I am going out to look at them tomorrow! Hopefully I can find something suitable and post a pic of the Duster soon!  ;)

That would be cool.  A loooong time ago, a buddy of mine had a Duster.  He was one of 3 brothers who's dad up here raced.  He was the Mopar brother.  The other two were Chevy and Ford. ;)  Years later, I was proud to be able to drive up to him in a 1973 Road Runner and then later, the '68 Charger R/T.  He did work for me for cookies, literally.  He just loves Mopars!  Can we blame him?  Hee hee!

Well, I bought one!!!  :)

It's an EPSON Perfection 1250. 1200 x 2400 dpi. And I can use Adobe photoshop with it, later on.
I managed to scan a number of pix, but not sure how to get them here.  ???

I saved them in my documents folder as JPEG files. Just playing around trying to figure out everything. Lot's to learn!

You can scan and send it to web or email. If you use the scan to web, it just sends you to their photo sharing site where you have to register.

But as I said I just saved them into a folder in Documents. What do I do now ?  ???

Wedgehead:

To get an attachment of one of your pics here, you just -- oops, no you don't!  Over at Dodge, they've got that BROWSE field underneath the field for the reply text.  I guess here you'll just have to insert, which means the picture has to be uploaded someplace on the web already.

Well, in that case, then you could upload a photo on my site.  ;D

Sheesh, this can get complicated to explain, but I'll give it a try.

1.  Click on the site there above.
2.  Click on Add Photo.
3.  Browse to MyDocuments on your computer.
4.  Select (highlight by clicking once) on the photo you want to upload.
5.  Add it.
6.  It'll probably make you install a photo upload program.  It's small so go 4 it.
7.  Once uploaded, click on the image you loaded so you have the FULLSIZE image.
8.  Right click on the fullsize image.  It gives you a pop-up menu.
9.  Left click on Properties at the bottom of that pop-up menu.
10.  Select (highlight) the URL in the properties box.
11.  Hold the CTRL (Control) key while pressing C.  This copies what you selected into the clipboard (memory).
12.  Create your message here.
13.  Type [ img ] (with no spaces ... I had to add spaces or it thought I was inputting an image) and then hold the CTRL key down and press V to paste the URL you copied, then type [ /img ].

That should do it!

If it's too much for ya' to follow here, just e-mail me and we can troubleshoot this over the phone so you can get it.  It's not as hard as it looks above!

Thank you very much Lah Tera!  :)

I printed off your instructions and will have to give it a try!

I certainly appreciate your reply and I will let you know if I experience any problems!  ;D

BTW, my photos were scanned at 300dpi. The scanner automatically sets that, I'm not advanced enough to change the settings yet. Is that resolution okay? My test on the Charger site looked fuzzy.  ::)
Later...
