a833 4 speed...
« on: February 10, 2008 - 09:46:57 PM »
Before I go and move a bunch of stuff and take pics and all, is anyone interested in a a833 4 speed transmission. It has the B and E body tailshaft. I did take the cover off and look inside and it looks good but I would throw a rebuild kit in it anyway just to be on the safe side. I did clean up the outside and paint it as well. I do have a small block bellhousing that I do not need as I am switching over to a 440. I will throw in the bellhousing as well. I got $300 into it and I would like to get that for it, but I am open for offers. If someone is interested, I will post pics then. I live in Dekalb, IL for pickup.

I might be interested in buying it. How hard are they to rebuild? And how much does the kit cost?

I am not sure how much the kit is, maybe $200-300 bucks. I could be wrong though. As long as the internals are all good a trans kit is pretty much just gaskets and seals. The inside looks good, no metal pieces or shavings or even dust. But I am not an expert on transmissions. I am selling this one because I bought one that is already rebuilt and I had this one laying around. I know....I am lazy I guess.

Too bad it is for pick up only.  Someone out there will be getting a good one though.

This is an a-833 OD trans, just so no one is confused.

Didn't the OD come out in the late 70's?  That is an aluminum case right.

Late 70's into the early 80's. It is an aluminum case, but the tailshaft is cast. It has the 5.12" input shaft but can be milled down to the 4.80" if need be.

I also have one of these trans.  is there any bad side to having an aluminum housing...will it take the abuse of a built small block?  I know the gear ratios are different.  any avise would be helpful...I am cinsidering using it behind a strong 340.

Well, I have been doing some homework on this subject.  I have found that if you have around 400 ft lbs of torque you will grenade the case.   This tranny would go good under a 318 or stock 340. I wouldn't go any further than that with this tranny.
Unfortunately I am unable to purchase this because of this reason.  Thanks anyway challenger71.  I think I will have to go with a cast iron case.  thanks though!!
