4 speed reverse question

Well I rebuilt the transmission toook 9 hours including removal and installation. Reverse was working fine, then we installed the side cover and reverse bound. So we tried what was reccomended by Brewers and Passon and that was to install only the two lower right cover bolts and then push the cover up as far as we could then install and tighten the rest and sure enough that fixed the problem. Thanks to everyone and the information shared.

72hemi, that is some absolutely great news for my ears.  With my arthritus pains dominating me on twisting wrenches on my back, you may have save me some major work   My trans used to go into reverse when I got it. I had installed the shifter and linkage while it was out to make all the adjustments on it before I installed it. Then after I had installed the trans and put gear oil in it, I noticed I had leaks, so I pulled the cover off and sealed it and it hasnt worked since. Maybe , just maybe I have the same problem and it will be a breeze for me.

 So what you're saying 72hemi is the cover can be out of alignment causing the reverse fork to not engage properly? Man, that would seem to be an EZ fix for sure. A drain and fill along with a new gasket.

That's is exactly what happened. and it was just slightly out of alignment.

I guess the only thing that seems odd to me is...1st 2nd 3rd and 4th are on the cover. Reverse is not and is mounted into the steel side of the housing and the fork for reverse is too. I read what your saying but don't understand. Unless the other shift fork in the rear of the cover plate is some how touching the reverse shifting fork.

the middle rear bolt on the side cover needs to have a double deep shoulder on the bolt , this aligns the side cover so reverse will not bind up , I`m sure Brewers will have the bolt available

 Could the cover not lining up properly cause the transmission to pop out of 2nd upon deceleration?

usually no the syncro hub or the gear itsealf is worn out , 2nd is the most common gear to do this as it iis shifted into & out of the most

 I think it's about rebuild time for mine then. Need a new tailshaft bushing also. Is it difficult to do?

not too bad but you do need a tool to load the countershaft into teh housing & special snap ring pliers to get the sanp rings off

I used the heater hose trick to load the countershaft into the case. Worked great.
