4 speed reverse question

I have a 833 4 speed transmission that is really hard to shift in and out of reverse. Does anyone know what could be causing this issue?

I have the very same problem. I figure I will know something by next week. My new seal kit just came in. I am positive my problem is internal. Is your linkage adusted right or do you figure you have the same internal problem. I will come back and post what I find with pictures if you don't find anything out.

 Mines always been difficult to get into reverse, not so out. Going from 1st to rev. (at a dead stop) seems to work best.:popcorn:

It's definately internal.

I would start by removing the spring & ball detent , you need to remove the smaller nut from the larger one first then remove the spring & ball with a magnet , if it suddenly shifts better iti has to be a problem in the detent , you will lose most of the fluid this way though

My dad was thinking that it might be the spring and ball. I will let you know what is found.

Well Dad checked the spring and ball and the ball did not come out. So what do I do now? There was oil in there though if that makes a difference.

 Did you stick a magnet down in the hole? You have to hook the ball to get it out.

yes, he stuck a magnet in the hole. We think the ball is stuck. Is that possible? :dunno:

Probable , stick a magnet down the hole & undo the outer nut , the outer nut has a sleeve to hold the ball & may be worn to prevent the ball from going into the sleeve , you may have to replace the outer nut / sleeve & ball

Did it go into reverse easily when the car wasn't running?

I have a spare trans for parts and it's torn down. I got it out today to do a pre test inspection of the ball and spring. I happend to notice that if you undo the nut and try to pull the ball and spring out, the ball will just fall right into the bottom of the casing. I'm wondering if that has happend to you. Also with the nut and spring out, you can check and see if reverse works easy with little to no effort now.

Reverse has always been tight. I think I am going to pull the whole thing down and rebuild it while its apart.

well, I took the spring and ball out of my 4 speed a few minutes ago without any good results. It still is tough trying to get the trans in reverse even with the shifter unhooked. So I guess mine is an internal problem.  I will just keep going forward untill I get the time and also buy a heavier pressure plate. Wish I had a youngin around here that could pull the trans for me. Im sure I could r&r it myself. 

Chryco was right also. I didnt really doubt him, but there is a nut on the end of a bigger nut. You can pull the spring,ball, and nut out without the ball falling into the trans. I wish the spring or ball would of been my problem.
