XV inner fender brace install Qs
« on: February 14, 2008 - 02:38:45 PM »
Has anyone installed the XV inner fender braces?  I'm curious as to how you dealt with the holes for the parking brake on the driver side.  Did you weld the brace high enough to clear the holes and then drill them out?  Any pictures and install advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.   :1zhelp:

The braces are installed high enough that they don't cover any holes on my 72.  Here's some pictures of the drivers side.

Any seat of the pants "before" and "after" comparison of the effect of these fender braces?

Did you weld the plate to the car first and then the bar or the bar to the plate then to the car?

I still cant decide if I should add them to my car and repaint the bay.....

Any seat of the pants "before" and "after" comparison of the effect of these fender braces?

has anyone driven a car with these???????????
should I worry about it?????????????

No driving test yet, I have sub-frame connectors and the XV radiator brace installed.  By just jouncing the car before and after the install I can tell it's much stiffer.

thedodgeboys: install instructions say to box in the forward mounting plate first, tack on the bulkhead plate, fit and tack on the bar, then finish welding.

Attached is a picture of the left side.  I used soapstone to outline where the bulkhead plate should go.  It's covering access to the top part of the parking brake assembly (center) and I'm-not-sure-what-hole on the left.  Trimmed and drilled the holes for a test fit.

Working on the bar right now.  Not sure how high on the shock tower brace the bar should go.  Travis, would you happen to have pictures of that area (from your second picture, the area on the left)?  Also, should the bar's curve be parallel to the ground or angle up in line with the existing brace?

Thanks.

Doh!  Sorry, I just looked again and yes mine covers up that same hole for the e-brake.  I'm not too worried about it though.  I'll probably mount it with just one hole and see how it does.  Otherwise I'll drill the hole out.

On the firewall mounting plate, I trimmed that same corner as well to get it to fit flush.

Jerry, I sent a bunch of pictures to your email.  Let me know if those are what you are looking for.

My car is still just sitting (instead of pro-touring, I call it pro-parking)   :P    but between the radiator support and fender braces it does seem a lot stiffer.  I know when I lift one corner in the rear now, it lifts the other side as well (like when I'm only trying to lift one tire).  I don't remember it ever doing that before, because every time it does it surprises me and I have to go get another jack stand.  I still don't have the subframe connectors installed yet either.

p.s. One other thing I did, was run welding beads to better reinforce the shock mounts to the inner fenders rather than just rely on the few factory spot welds.  I had noticed XV did that on their orange car and I figured it couldn't hurt since I was repainting the engine bay anyway, plus my car is not a resto.

Here you go.  The unpainted ones are a little easier to see.
