Manual low

I have a 904 in my Challenger that will not shift into manual low. If you take it off the linkage it still won't. A guy looked at it and said it was something in the tailshaft. But, I forgot what... Thanks in advance!

Do you mean that shifter won't go to the low position or the trans will not take off in low from a start?

The trans will not go into 1st if you try to pull it down with the shifter. It does shift into 1st when driving normal though. But, you can pull it down into 2nd gear.

So you have already disconnected the linkage at the trans and it still won't? Does the lever go to low at the trans but not at the shifter? Just try'in to get the full picture.

That is correct.

I would drop the pan and check for something in the way.  If you see nothing, remove the VB.

It's really hard to see from here BUT...

Has the Shifter Linkage Lever Came Undone and let it slip?BACK is PARK...Most Generally you will need to turn Driveshaft to get it to LOCK into PARK.IF IT IS A TURBO ACTION or other Manual VB and you have it on jack stands IT WILL NOT SHIFT CORRECTLY..It needs pressure resistance to shift.

Is this a Standard VB or What do you have?Forward or Reverse?Manufacturer?Who built the trans?How Long ago?Run Since?It Kinda sounds like there might be an obstruction in the VB Maze.ALSO Make sure you have the Shifter Lever Linkage on Correctly..

Is it possible somebody swapped out the valve body with one from a 727? The valve body is basically the same but the parking pawl is different length. If so it may be going too far back into the extension housing and hitting.

I believe that this is an untouched trans that was working fine.
Any updates on this one?

A buddy of mine that knows quite a bit about transmissions looked at it awhile ago. We even changed the valvebody but it didn't change anything. He thought it was something in the tailshaft. I can't remember what he said it was. We just didn't have time to pull it apart that night because he lives over a hour away and I couldn't leave the car there.

Seems VERY possible the Park Rod is the 727 Long rod..
