I believe that this is an untouched trans that was working fine.

No, the trans has never been 100%. It probally needs gone through again. It was rebuilt about 5 years ago and the car has only been driven the past two. It hasn't ever went into manual low :(

I checked I do have the correct rod. What should I look at next? About a inch from the end that goes into the tailshaft there are two worn spots. Is this normal?

Take the "e" clip off the park rod and stick the VB up with 2 bolts with no park rod. Check and see if it goes to manual low then.

You could try a different 727 park rod in case yours is bent. If not bent,it must have something in the way in the extension housing.

This is a 904...

I Bet what it is that the Spring/Arm for the Park Lever has slipped out or wasn't put back in..
Thus not allowing the arm to go all the way into the tail housing. If it IS intact you should pull the valve body linkage(Park Rod)all the way toward the rear. Then set the body down. Then stick your finger in the opening where the park rod goes and make sure it is in a Neutral position on the park clog.To do this you may have to turn the drive shaft a little to let the rod SLIP into the LOCK position..

The tailshaft is the output shaft. You bought the extension housing so yes you can change it in the car.
