I never give an absolute promise for anything - never know when you will get run over, or when something else completely screws you over.

The best I give is usually a 'I will do my best' (which is probably the equivalent of another persons promise?), or 'I will do what I can'.

I imagine if I did give an absolute promise, it would be something really, really important. Until then, no promises.

Sorry - If you tell someone you will be there, or that you will ring at a certain time, I expect you ring alot earlier and say "i wont be able to" etc so you dont keep the guy waiting for something that is not going to take place.

It really gets to me when people don't ring or inform you of plan-changes.. I know a girl who is basically the queen of standing people up. Once she warned me she may not be able to meet me because she had an old friend she wanted to meet.

When the time came to meet me, she didn't show up (she didn't ring, I found out via waiting). I figured she was with her friend.

Later, I found out, no, she stood up both of us because she couldn't be bothered going out that day.

If I tell someone I'm going to do something with them, then that's what I do.

I enjoy doing things with someone else. What I really hate, is when you make plans to do something with someone, like go to a car show, swap meet, etc, and then they back out at the last minute for some lame reason. It's then too late to find someone else, and you end up either not going, or going alone and having a crappy time.

Here is my take. If i want to buy something, I'll give you a deposit and we'll draw up a purchase agreement. It will state the purchase price, the deposit, and the terms of how long the car will be held for. This way, there are no questions. If I'm selling, I do the same. This takes out all the possible confusion over a deal. From a seller's standpoint, I cant tell you how many times I've held a car or part for someone without a deposit, and they never come thru with the $$. So unless i know you personally, I'm getting a deposit and we're signing a sales agreement, or the part/car is available until i see the $$. Now if I'm buying something, and the seller wont take a deposit, I'll be darn sure he/she gets the $$ as soon as i can arrange it, no BS.

I put a deposit on a 71 Roadrunner at Carlisle 3 years ago. $1K deposit, balance due ($16,000) within the week. Wrote up an agreement, guy was from florida and a licensed car dealer. He was supposed to store the car in a storage place in carlisle and send me the key to it when I gave him the $$. After i tried for 3 days to get ahold of him starting Monday after carlisle, i finally got him on the cell and in the next several weeks got all kinds of BS stories about what was going on. Finally, I paid $20 to an internet search company and got his home phone number and address. Called him there, got his wife , told her what was going on and let her know if i did not see my deposit money back in the next 3 days, i was calling the Florida state attorney general's office. Got my check within 2 days. about 2 months later, that car came up for sale in new york...called the seller and it turns out he paid 19K for it at carlisle about 2 hrs after i had put my deposit down. So much for the agreement, it's only as good as the person's word. It will give you some proof in court if you end up there.

Now I've dealt with a guy on several Mopar deals, if we agree to something, we're good. No paper, etc. If i ask him about something on the car, he'll tell me if he knows the answer, no BS. But thats an exception in this day and age, sorry to say.

Not trying to start anything because I kind of agree with all of you. I just need to see something clearly. If someone is selling a car, they are trying to make a profit. Correct? You don't know for what reason. Maybe flip the car. Maybe to pay off debt. So you lock a price and then someone else comes along with a higher offer. This goes on all the time selling homes. It's called a bidding war. Sucks for the buyer, great for the seller. My issue with the pool table was the owner NEVER gave me a chance to make a COUNTER offer. Not that she sold it to someone else for more money. After all, she porbably paid alot more than I bought it for.
Case in point. An across the street neighbor's son came over to me one day to tell me about high mint GTO that he got for a steal. Lets call him schmuck. Some of the posts here sounded like that. Were going to buy something for a great price and then lost to a better offer. What you don't know is WHY the seller is selling. The neighbor's son bought the GTO off a guy trying to raise enough money for Cancer treatment of his mother. I will go further and not assume any of you would ever pull the next trick that Schmuck did. The seller and his mother spoke Greek. They were discussing the Cancer/money issues in front of him and didn't know he (Schmuck) spoke Greek as well. When he got the info that they were strapped for cash he low balled them with a pathetic offer that he knew they would have to take. Now what if someone came along and offered that seller more money? Would you blame him?
I guess what I'm trying to say is if your going to buy something the best bet is to go there with cash in hand and finish it before the seller can change his mind or accept another offer.

I generally try to go out of my way to keep my word.  I hate the idea of not living by the Golden Rule (which btw is not only an Andy Grifith value but one for in the Good book itself - Jesus said it best, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.")  Afterall, if people can't take you at your word, then what possible good will come of it later in life.

I recently sold a car to a guy for a loss even after I decided not to sell it and pulled it from the market.  I had given him my word that he could buy it within 2 weeks once he got the money together.  I did not take a deposit from him and when he called 2 weeks later (true to His word), I sold him the car.

BTW - Sorry Cuda-Hunter I waited over 3 weeks for the $$ for the mufflers and tips (it still has not arrived) and really did not want to go back on my word to sell them to you.  Hope you understand.

I never would have bought my challenger if i would have saw it first.... the seller used old pics... and lied about the motor specs.... but rather than deal with a junkie drug dealer probably and ebay I stuck it out.....

He said it had roller rockers and as soon as I pulled of the valvecovers they were stock rockers... just for example....

Unfortunately, too many people live by the credo of "do unto others, before they do unto you".   :pullinghair:

This is off topic, but Stroker reminded me of something funny from when I worked as a manager of a storage place. There was an addict who had a 66 Mustang fastback there. About once a month he'd come in high as a kite and pull pieces off his car to sell for drug money.  A couple of weeks later he'd come back in, relatively straight and sober, and ask me who'd been stealing stuff off his car  :roflsmiley:

Never had that happen to me but I'm sure it'll happen to me at least once in my life time ::).  Just dishonesty and greed are what cause that, terrible shame... :walkaway:

I agree with that.  It makes me mad when someone does that to me also.  I also hate to be lied to like the younger generation seems to love to do.  Just wish they would think about what they are doing before they do it.  Seems they are only out for themselves and no one else.  My step son told me a big one and finally caught him at it and would not trust him or his word again.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development
