Unfortunately, too many people live by the credo of "do unto others, before they do unto you".   :pullinghair:

   Mike

Yup - I just got another collection call from an agency that works for the Yellow Pages.  As some of you know, I sold my sign and stripe business to a buddy, Cuda-Joe back in May of '06.  About a year ago, after he'd had the business for several months, I got a call from a Private Investigator/Skip Tracer.  Turns out, when I sold Joe the business, I worked with him for 2 months (free of charge) and during that time I started to hand over the bills to him as well.  I specifically handed him the yellow pages bills each month and told him, "You have to pay this. It is for the advertising that is placed for the business."  He said, "Okay."  Well, I move away, he moves the shop closer to his home, and forwards all of the mail etc.  Turns out, he just kept one of the phone numbers (despite my recommendation that he forward the other one as well) and never paid for any of the advertising that kept that phone ringing.  Now, Bell South is coming after me for the 2 GRAND he stiffed them and, because I took him at his word, I may be screwed.  AND this is after I sold him the business at a discount (although he may argue that) because I considered him a friend!

An interesting side note, he's lost EVERY printing and sign customer I had, some of whom I had for YEARS.  Unfortunately, I have a Non-Compete with him that I agreed to for 2 years and I still have a few months left on it.  Otherwise, I'd go back into the sign and stripe business as a more full-time sideline and make up the 2 grand out of his Ebay pocket.  But, like this thread says, I gave my word that I would not compete for 2 years and I plan on honoring that.

Oh well - sorry for the rant  :stomp:

Me too.

If I say I'm going to be somewhere, I'll be there...on time. Made a deal from me, then I follow thru.
Ask me for a favor, and I will try my best to meet your expectation.

You only live once and when I get old and I can't do anything much and the time is near, I want to be thought of as someone who was there for them and wasn't unfair or dishonest to others.

If you're like me and had to buy all of your Challenger/'Cuda parts twice...:swear: then you know what it means to keep your word! When my partner and I started our alternator and starter resto business we agreed our gaurantee would be simple: You don't pay for the finished product until you're completely satisfied with our work. If we can't make it right you don't pay. Simple, but the way I'd like to be treated!

I try to treat people the way id like to be treated. I would feel bad if i ever misrepresented a part or cheated someone. Im not a religious guy by any means, but i always react as if someone really were "always watching"

I got rear-ended in my Challenger by some F#@(ing cabby a couple years ago. I was HOTT  :swear: in other experiences i had waited 4 HOURS for Baltimore Police to show up, so i took his license info and never filed a report. after weeks of calling, he finally said "who? ummm i dont remember" i went off and used quite alot of threatening slurs to put it lightly  :swear:

my exhaust was bent down, but that was it

I see this cab around now and again, but the funny thing is i never retaliated. i wanted to at the time.

same goes for the fender on my car, i was told to doctor it up for this Carlisle, but how would you feel if you got a sweet looking fender for $300 got it home, and grinded the paint off just to see that there is no sheet metal left in the nose. No way, cant do it. someones ending up with a cheap fender that needs some welding

I guess I dont understand about the bill. If you have proof that you sold the business to him, why wouldn't they go after him?

Could depend on wether or not the sign company was setup as a corporation.  Regardless, if there was a verbal agreement, I believe it should have been kept.
