Auto quick shift.............
« on: February 17, 2008 - 10:26:49 PM »
Hello guys........ 440 and assuming a 727 with what is supposed to be a 323 rear gear.
First.........If I leave the slapstick in D and take off, I am in 3rd or drive in about 20 feet.  Engine pulls ok but very quick shift.  I can shift manually and it shifts when I want it to.  Will  bark the tires easily too.
Second.  The rpm seems to be too high.  I know the speedometer is off so I have to work on that too.  The question is.........what should the RPM be with a 323 gear when running at 60 MPH?   I haven't been paced yet but at what I think is about 55, it is turning around 4000.  Any help is appreciated.

Do you have kickdown linkage hooked up?

What size rear tires are you running? (has to do with determining 60mph/3.23 Rpm)

Assuming you have 26" tires, you should be at 2500-2600RPM at 60 MPH. Do you at least know that your tach is accurate? The fast shifting up to third could be lack of tension on your kick-down rod.  :dunno:

Kick down linkage is not right, that is why it is shifting too fast. It needs to be tighter. (or as Mike said "is it hooked up?" )

I will try to take some pics today.  It has a Torker intake with a 750 Edlebrock. I just put on a new throttle cable and I thought something looked strange.  The linkage hits the throttle cable bracket when you open up all way.  I am in an area that I don't know much about now.  (Linkage and such)

Can you work the throttle and watch the lever down on the transmission move along with it? (careful dont just load up your motor full of fuel.).

If it all seems like its working fine, you need to use some of the adjustments that are built into that linkage to get the transmission lever to push back more than it currently is. What thats doing is telling your transmission how much throttle you are on. As your carb linkage gets pulled back, it relays that down to the transmission and moves that lever back.

So if you leave from a light, 100% throttle, it will raise the shift points (trans lever almost 100% back). If you take off like a grandma, it lowers them. Basically what you are finding is that its taking off, boom, boom, third gear. Shifting too soon, so you need to get that transmission lever back further to raise your shift points up to where they should be.

You should be able to spot the lever from looking down the engine bay with a flashlight onto the transmission. Just follow that linkage down. Make sure its all moving! You can, and will hurt your transmission with excessivlely low throttle pressure due to a lower line pressure allowing your clutches to slip and not hold. (atleast thats how i remember it, tactrans will set me straight lol)

You have your orangish lever on backwards, the elongated slot goes to the front.

Thanks Guys......I hope it is that simple.  I will turn the lever around tomorow.  Scheduled to go to get a full service on Thursday.  I did some maintenance but taking her to the pros for full  service.  Didn't want to drive too much before making sure all fluids and grease fittings had been touched.

Just a good going over of the car to make sure all servicable points are looked at and everything is OK.   Back when I was working on the car, I changed the oil and filter, but haven't really done anything else.  She was in my garage for almost 4 years and I don't know how long she sat at the previous owners house.  Just want to let someone who does this type thing all the time to look and advise.  Thanks for all you guys help.  I looked at the service manual and the lever is on wrong.  Its been like that since I got the car.  Guess the previous owner put it on that way.  I want to get her ready for about a 2 1/2 hour ride to Virginia.  My parents want me to drive her up there.  Most of the drive is on 4 lane at 65, so I want to feel good about the trip.

Looks like a two barrel lever as well. The orangeish bracket as mentioned before is on backwards, but I think it will also be too short even when flipped. As the throttle is opened it should start moving that lever immediately. the idea is that when you are at full throttle the kickdown lever is back as far as it can go. The bucks down fix it to put a bolt and nut in the lever to effectively make the slot shorter so that the throttle starts pushing it as you push on the gas pedal. The correct fix it to get the right linkage. The high rise intake angle makes the situation a little worse. I couldn't find a picture of a one piece linkage, but here's one with the three piece so you can get the idea.

OK......Flipped the lever. She does shift differently.   Now I think I have to work on adjusting the linkage.  Starting from a standstill and normal takeoff, I felt the shifts and they were very smooth.  Before there was a definite thump.  It is still going into 2nd and 3rd too quick but not like it was.
