Wiper motor problems?
« on: February 18, 2008 - 12:58:35 AM »
Today I drove the car, and for the first time, it was misting rain when I had it out.  The wiper blades on the car were shot, so I couldn't turn the wipers on.  When I got back, I went to the store to pick up a new set.  I put them on, and got in the car to turn on the wipers(2 speed wiper motor).  This is the first time they had been turned on it probably 27-8 years.  The wipers would go all the way up then stop on low speed.  I turned it on high speed and they would do nothing.  Then, I could turn the switch back to the slower speed, and they would go back down, but not all the way.  I did this about 5 times, but I never could get them to work consistently.  When I replaced the engine harness, I replaced the wiper motor harness too.  Does the problem sound like an issue with the wiper transmission?  It sounded like something was scraping/rubbing when I had the wipers turned on.  Could it be the motor?  The wipers were extremely slow about moving up and down.

You state you have a 2-speed wiper switch. Do you have a 2-speed wiper motor also?

OK,

You have a 2-speed wiper motor. I just wanted to confirm some genious didn't put a 2-speed switch on a three speed motor like mine.  :stomp:

Possibly it just needs some oil?   :dunno: I haven't taken one apart though.

Make sure the Ground strap is making good contact to the firewall.  I have seen testing instructions posted here before.  Try a search. :2thumbs:

Could be the motor has a bad contact. Could be the in dash switch. Bad ground.
Tough call without going through a thorough check. The sound you mention makes me think it could well be the
motor itself.
