Stripe or no Stripe? or Original?
« on: February 18, 2008 - 08:33:25 PM »
We are finishing the details on the restoration of my 70 Challenger R/T SE, and I'm not sure about the final detail. Should I put the original Body side moulding back on the car? Or maybe a side stripe ? What do you guys think? I like the idea of being as original as possible, but moulding? I dont know it kind of looks bad. Help me out. check out my car at

I have nothing against the moulding, it's nice to see an OE every now & then, but on your R/T with the hood blackout I would go with a stripe or nothing.

I voted original since you said the word restoration. I think it would be unique. But I also lean towards the stripe if your just doing your car as refreshed and doing it your way and not by the build sheet.

I voted no stripe because I think it looks great just the way it is, but I think it would also look great with the stripe. Not much help, I know. :-\

I like the side molding for originality and don't think it looks all that bad.  I am going to put the side molding back on my car.  However, for 1970, I love the longitude stripe on most cars.  I am going to go ahead and vote for the molding.  Good luck with a tough decision.

Since it is your car I would go with the moulding (I think it looks better on challengers than cuda's), but then again I like to see something different every now and then. On the other hand if one of my cars would have came with the moulding it would not go back on, but my 71 came with a billboard and the 70 came without the hockey stripe and had a luggage rack and that's exactly how they're going back. Good luck and the car looks great!  :2thumbs:

Side stripe and NO moulding.  The body line is sharp enough without detailing it with moulding.  Black side stripe will blend nicely with your tires and vinyl top!

:clapping: Perhaps something subtle like a Blue side stripe would look good and just that little bit more personalised. :2thumbs:

If you're doing a correct restoration then it has to be what came with the car, otherwise (duh) it won't be "correct". If you like something else, go with that and flag the correctness, it's your car, not the judges. ;) That is the same colour mine was, vinyl top included and B5 interior. Mine also had the body side molding. As you can see I totally went with what I liked lol. ;D Best of luck with the decision, this far along it's never easy no matter the choices.

Like NZ is hitting on, it depends upon how "correct" you want to be.

If that's not a big deal, I do like the 70 R/T stripe but I would do one maybe in a sort of "non-conventional color" combo than what is normally seen.  The light blue in the above pick does look nice but you'll have to remove the R/T emblems won't you?

Body side moulding it ok but not as sporty looking.  Sometimes it makes the car a little "stodgy" looking, but it does add definition to the car and accentuates the bodyline a little more.

You might want to try doing mock mouldings by using some electrical tape on the car and see what it looks like.  :dunno:  Weird idea but it may give you a better idea.  Body side mouldings are nice because they doo serve a purpose with door dings but I don't think you'll be bringing your car to the mall shopping anytime soon...  I have them on my car.  Sometimes I wish I didn't have them but they are a little different and they are factory ones.

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Welp, looks like the side stripes are running the lead in votes, but as said before, it's your car and your call.....
