Breaking in engine with new tranny attached question

Next weekend I'm going to help my freind break in the 383 in his 70 Charger, in my 30 years wrenching on old cars I've never owned an auto transmission so I'm not sure what to do here. He had the engine and tranny both rebuilt so we're going to do the 20 minute break in thing on the engine but what do you do about the transmission fluid? the torque converter will suck up all the oil we can get in the transmission right off the bat won't it? so how do you deal with the transmission without shutting down the engine on break in? do you just add oil while it's running ?

Fresh trans, start in neutral and add about 8 quarts while running.

I would have at least 4 qts in before starting it then add after setting run speed , timing & mixture screws

Reviving an old thread, as I am getting ready to do the same thing.  Do you fill the torque converter up before setting it in or just put it in dry and add fluid?  Probably fill it up about half full so that it does not spill out.  Approx. how many qts, dry, does a 727 hold?  Then after about a 100 mile break in, change the filter and fluid and should add about how many qts??  Feel like such a bonehead sometimes.  I could probably look in my manual when I get home in a week, but I am board at work and thought I would ask since I am sure that many of you have done it!  Thanks!

Dry a 727 will take quite a bit... fill the converter first.

approx 9 qts dry , put some in the converter first if possible but I doubt you will get a qt in there

You do not HAVE to fill the converter first but it doesn't hurt to do it. Remember to start it up in NUETRAL !

Why would you start it up in neutral?  Why not park?  This is going to be something that I need to remember somehow!

If you start it up in park,you will get no fluid flow,no converter fill. (that is why you check the fluid in neutral) You could burn something up in the transmission.
