OEM rear sway bar on lowered car?
« on: February 23, 2008 - 08:04:34 AM »
I got my OEM rear sway bar yesterday (thanks Mark!) and it and the endlinks and bushings are in surprisingly good shape. Was hoping to install it this weekend while I am doing the rear disc brake conversion. I'd like to buy new links and bushings for it. Is it okay to use the stock 3" links with a 2" dropped car?

I would think they should still work fine.  By the way, there is another member here (farmboy70) who is selling some aftermarket links and poly bushings like the origionals.  I bought a set from him an the look great.

you can try it but i put a stock t/a sway bar in the rear and it was really tight , and was too stiff , ive have lowered my car about 2 inches , maybe that was why it was so tight :bricks1:

is a T/A sway bar the same as the stock 3/4" rear sway bar? My car is dropped 2" as well and am hoping I can make this work.

Oh, I see they don't call out a part for the rear bar.

On another topic, what are you going to do with the leafs moved inward.  I did mine, and the rear sway bar doesn't really fit that great.

It's +2" too long, wonder if they made a b-body sway bar.  Seems like that's what needed once the springs are moved inward.

Good question, I remember someone (HP2?) that addressed that by drilling a new hole outboard of where the existing hole is. I will have a problem with that too actually.

Looks like you are right Drew. It is going to be too tight to impossible. I dont know how I can snake that thing in around the exhaust. I may end up having to use the Hellwig frame-hung one I have. The thing is, even if i had the body back up two inches it still seems like it would be tough to work around the exhaust.

Does anyone have pics of their OEM rear sway bar from a side shot showing how close it is to things?

EDIT: Holy Crap - I just hit 2000 posts. Thats a lot of posting!  :chatting: :woohoo: :chatting: :woohoo:  :chatting: :woohoo:  :chatting: :woohoo:  :chatting: :woohoo:

And I would (and did for mine) buy the black poly bushings and lube with the silicon grease supplied. The red ones have a habit of squeaking where you hear it at low speeds.

Another option is to use one of the drag race style rear bars that mount in the trunk and have arms that go through the floor to attach to the housing. Fair amount of fab work there.

BTW, I haven't done rear sway bars on springs moved inboard. Musta been someone else.

Sorry for that, I had to go thru a bunch of old related posts. It was Shelbydogg.

Here is a pic of the rear sway bar plates, that I modified to have a second hole 1" outward. They should also work if you just moved the perches.  Those aftermarket bars hang too low. With a welder you can make anything.

are the endlinks too long Mike? I was planning on using lowering blocks in the rear for mine. I have seen another challenger use 2'' blocks between the spring pad and the axle housing. They used the same stock style rear sway bar that I have. I have my rear sway bar temporarily hookuped up and it seems like it will fit. How did you lower your car? Recurevd / Decurved Springs?

No, I used 2" lowering blocks. My exhaust seeems to be the biggest obstacle. It may still work but I am gonna get my brakes squared away then try and snake it in there.  One thing is for sure, its close even at stock ride height. Lowering the car makes things even closer.
