Musclecar 1000 07 cruise this past oct.  40 cars cruised (raced!) for 6 days, 1000 km from Coronado, Ca to Palm springs, up to Lake Arrowhead, down into LA, spent a day racing @ Cal Int'l Speedway & ended @ playboy mansion.  Live fox coverage of 12 cars that were craned up to mid deck, where we drove thu the carrier to the flight elevator & all 12 went up together to the top deck.   Fox news was all over it.  Invited CHrysler & the superstock CHally when it was red, white & blue, but they declined.  Admiral gave us a tour & most highly decorated medal of honor winner of ww2 & Korean war gave a talk while we had lunch on the deck.  Then off to the burnouts.  Here's Dave Tweedy's spectacular burnout

It was on local TV for a little while, but Fox News had it on all day.  Had a friend on the east coast call to say he saw us being hoisted up.  ONly regret was my bro couldn't get his 69 Charger R/T trailered there for the burnouts.  I wanted the Hemi CHally & his Charger to go head to head, just like back in 70.  But he made it anyway & sat co-pilot.   Once in a lifetime opportunity I'll never forget, especially because of a miraculous rescue that happened the day before the Midway.
I fractured my oil pan on the way back to the hotel & saw no way to get it repaired in time. Chally was so low, something in an intersection of downtown Coronado split the pan's seam wide open.
Unreal how events had me in Jack Hinton's Mopar shop getting the pan welded up.  Needless to say, we made the 1000 mile trip & only scraped the pan twice @ 90 mph down from arrowhead.  That's a testimony to Jack's welding expertise

Now why didn't they do that when I was stationed on her?  I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

My longest at sea period was 111 days from port to port in 1984.

Good to see that she is still being put to good use.  Ha.

My hat goes off to you after the Admiral painted an action filled picture of the Midway's history.  Its quite a floating museum that's open to the public. Her "crew" was awsome in craning us up & down. 3 of us waited till closing time to help take the 12 cars down, while the rest of the 40 cars & drivers went on to Dana Point.  You shoulda seen the heads turn on the freeway as Chris' Sublime Superbird, Reno's Hemi orange T/A & my Go Mango chally blasted down the freeways to Dana Point.  The Bird's "2 story" spoiler kept us from getting lost in traffic!

Triggerfish,

So now you know that the Midway spent most of its life in Japan.  She was my first tour of duty in 1983.  I retired from the Navy in 2003.

Thanks

Just outta curiosity, how did they drag race on the deck?!?  I mean I know they're loooong ships - I was in VA Beach for a homecoming of the Enterprise - but they're not THAT long...
