How do people restore colored interiors?
« on: February 23, 2008 - 10:54:35 PM »
Black is the most common interior color, yet finding a nice set of black door panels can be very challenging. So, I was just wondering, what do people with colored interiors do? Do they try to have theirs reconditioned, do they have a black set painted, do they buy repop panels, or what? I've heard that most repop panels are junk, is that true? I'm curious, but am also interested because I might want to change my interior color.

Most of the time the only panels that survived are the black interior panels because these were the only ones that used UV resistant plastic. The colored panels used different colored plastics which did not stand up to UV rays and deteriorated.

The options are:

1) You can send your panels to Just Dashes to be revived with there re-skinning process however the grain pattern is not correct and this process is expensive.

2) The repop's fit so/so and can be dyed any color. Again, the grain pattern is not 100%.

3) If you can find a set of nice original black panels, they can be dyed any color. (I prefer this option)

Thanks

Can you dye them yourself, or do you still need to send them to someone like Just Dashes?

I've done a couple of sets with SEM dye. They have a prep spray that degreases them, then you choose your color of dye. It's spray on, so it's fairly easy to do.

Red.

I have to get headliner, carpet, seat covers, and dashpad so since I will have to spend the money, I can easily get them in red. The only thing I would have to worry about is the console and door panels. I've seen red steering wheels, but I don't know if the dye would hold up on a steering wheel.

What steering wheel is it?  I don't see why you couldn't get it wrapped in red leather.  Just Dashes did my door panels last winter and I just received back the console that I sent them to re-do (it's actually at the interior shop that's goinf to put my new headliner in so, until I go to the shop to see and photograph it, I don't have any pictures.

Moparal offered to sell me a steering wheel, but I haven't seen it, so I don't know which one it is. He's been busy, as usual, so I told him not to worry about it until he has the time. If I can't get the wheel done, I may just leave it black, or maybe I'll just try to find a wooden one at a decent price.

When you said that Just Dasheds did your door panels and console, what did you have them do?

Last winter they covered the door panels with new vinyl.  More info here:

and here:

I was so happy with their work that I sent out the console and window pillar moldings to be re-covered this fall.  Haven't seen it yet, but I know it's back and I'm expecting good things. I'm going to try to get to the interior shop on Monday to see the console and grab a pic or two.

I guess I'm a little confused. Aren't the ebody door panels and console just a hard plastic? How can they cover them with vinyl?

Some parts can be vacuum formed by drilling holes from behind the panel in areas for the vinyl to hold on to.  Most important for areas where their are corners or crevises.  Very interesting proceedure to see done.

So if you had a nice set of door panels, and console, and you set them to Just Dashes, would they cover them in vinyl, or just dye them?
