    Door panel shows scrapes too easily

    My drivers’ side door panel shows scrapes very easily on top of the panel.  You can take your finger nail and run it along the top of the door panel (where you usually rest your arm out the window) and leave a scrape in the panel.  It seems like the plastic is starting to deteriorate.    It’s only on the drivers’ side panel. Has anyone had this problem?  Will a typical SEM product\process restore take care of this problem or do I need to replace this one panel? I've included some pics for viewing pleasure.

    Ahhh.   Plastic rot.  Usually very bad for the lighter colors where the sun hit them or dry weather toasted them.  Most of my panels now are black and still have the original hardness.  Some of my friens tried to paint theirs but the grain still showed sanding marks or the finger nail scratches. I've seen some "custom" ones recovered with leather, but they aren't original looking.  You might just have to spend for some new ones or find some used black ones to repaint.

    I agree with Shelbydogg that this isn't a good sign. The white door panels get hit the most by this. My originals were white that someone tried to dye black. The top edge just didn't feel right. VERY hard plastic type of feel. Apparently the sun sucks the life out of them. I was lucky enought to find a nice set of originals on E-Bay to replace my chalky panels.

    Yeah, my door panels were like that, they are blue ones.  Turned almost a green/aqua color from the sun, very chaulky.

    I'm not a resto type of guy so I "Mickey Moused" it since I don't $$$ to spring for a new set.  I basically scaped off as much chaulky stuff as I could and repainted it with Plasticote interior vinyl paint, which matched the blue very well. (By looking at the back side of the panel that wasn't exposed to the sun.

    Yes, the texture is off in those areas but for me it was a quick fix without spending too much $$$.
