A funny behaviour of a steeringbox
« on: February 24, 2008 - 04:47:05 PM »

While rebuilding my engine i also took out the steeringbox for replacement of the sealings. seems like all Mopars I ever had
happens to suffer from any kind of leakage. I opend it from the top towards the the steeringcolumn and changed sealing and o-rings.
I also changed the -o-rings in the little "house" on top where the hoses are attached. Now the funny thing, when I started up the car
today the steeringwheel steer the wheels to full right without me doing anything, the car is standing still on idle!
What did I do wrong? Has it to do with how I set the column back on the steeringbox? Any suggestions are welcome  :clueless:

There is a valve in the "little house" on top of the box that has to be centered when the wheels are straight ahead, otherwise it will do exactly what you are describing. I don't have a manual here at home, but if someone else doesn't post the fix before tomorrow, I'll post it when I get to work.

undo the 2 1/2 " nuts slighty & just tap the housing up or down on the box until the wheel stays centered , the retunr hose attaches to tthe lower end of this housing

You mean the little house on the little bigger house, the bolts not seen on the picture, where the hose with a normal clamp is attached?

you can see one of the bolts in the picture , they are 1/2 " & are at 90 * pointed into the box from the big hex bolt at the end of the housing in the picture

Now I remember trying to close the "little" house I had to turn the valve inside to be able to get it down on steeringbox.
So I have to do this while the car is on idle and wheels turned forward? What about the oil I just filled up?

Yup, fill it up.  Loosen the bolts, tap it a little, tighten them back up, and try starting the car.

I think it's called the "over center" adjustment.

I used to do this a lot when I did front end alignments.

If you can, try to note which direction (up or down) affects the steering wheel in which corresponding direction (left or right.)

My problem is my car turns easier in one direction (right I believe) then it does left.  I want to adjust this valve just enough to "even the feel" of the steering, but don't want to go the wrong direction and make it even worse!

Where did you get the new O-rings and seals? How was the installation?

I bought the kit at jimsautoparts. I have always been "afraid" of the steeringbox but I must say that the plan coming with the seal and bearingkit
was very helpful. same as the drawing in the servicemanual but only naming the parts belonging to the change. My didn't leak at the pitmanarm
so I only had to open the big nut on the top, where the steeringcolumn attaches and take out the parts according to the plan, seals and the bearing.
There is the seal on the top of the outgoing shaft and also a bearing on that. the rest is o-rings. For the "little house" on top of the steeringbox
there is also a number of o-rings to be changed and what I now learned, the zero position valve setting. For me doing it the first time I must say
with normal skills and knowing the importans of clean parts it's not difficult. I attache the drawing coming with the kit. Good Luck!
