Steering column
« on: February 25, 2008 - 07:05:46 PM »
Hello,

I am changing my 73 Cuda from power to manual steering.  I have a manual column, but it is kind of rough.  I want to know how hard is it and do you need any special tools to swap the steering shafts on my columns?  Also how do you do it?  Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt, It is very easy. Bring it over to my shop and I will do it for you for free. I like helping members. I have a power steering shaft and coupling that you can get from me. I also have a pwr steering box....Al

You must pull the column to do the job the easy way.

Thanks moparal, but I am in New York.  We have such great members here on the board.  If you could give me some tips that would be great.

you have to remove the crush can then undo the turn signal switch & remove the snapring just above the brg & tap the shaft out of the brg & it will slide out the bottom of the column

Matt, what parts do you have for the swap?  I am traveling right now, but may be able to supply you with something if you need it and are not going to get started for a month or so. I have a 70 and a 74 pwr steering box , both with low mileage out of e bodies, I have the shorter stock shaft and the coupler needed also.  Let me know if you need any help. Chryco has the verbal side of this for you. I am not good with words, but can do it blind folded if need be.   Al......  Oh yeah, I am not trying to push any sales on you so dont feel pressured. I am just trying to help

Thanks for the info Chryco.  It came apart just fine.  My next question is, "are there any differences in couplers that go to the box?"  The coupler that was one my manual column doesnt want to fit on the manual box I bought.
