Southern California members???
« on: February 25, 2008 - 08:30:49 PM »
Anyone in the Los Angeles area remember a 1970 FK5 Burnt Orange V-code 4-spd 'Cuda?  It was owned by a guy in South Gate. Options were: V1G Gator Grain top, PW, console, shaker, 4.10 Dana 60 Super Track Pak, AM/FM radio with three speaker dash, rear defog and body side moldings.  I just bought the car and want to locate the original drivetrain and any other parts for the car.  The buildsheet would be nice too:)  BS23V0B179158

Very cool car!

Have you checked all of these places for broadcast sheets yet?

Taped to the back side / top of the glove box insert.
Under the front bucket seats in the springs
Inside the bucket seat backs
Under the rear seat bottom
In the rear seat back.
Under the package tray (speaker shelf)
Under the carpet

Hi Barry,

Yes, I did aside from the speaker panel as I doubt it will be there since there is not enough room between the defog vent and the package tray speaker perforations... The seat covers and carpet are the originals as far as I can tell. Hopefully, someone will know of the car and have some of the parts/documentation :cooldancing:

I have parted out many E-bodies (who knew...) over the course of 20 years and have yet to find a buildsheet under the package tray, has anyone actually located one there???

Yes.

Other strange locations include wrapped around the lower steering column, inside the door panels and even stuffed into the C-pillars.

There are places they normally show up, and some odd ones as well.

Hi James,

Nice car!

I just found your pics here, since the car is a Hamtrack build, there is a good chance there is a BS buried somewhere (unlike LA cars).

It's hard to tell in the first photo, but if it has the chrome exhaust tips through the back panel, it's not an original California car.  440-6 & hemicuda's sold new in California got turndowns due to noise regulations.

Finding an original California car with a rear defogger is pretty rare also, due to the milder climates.

I'm starting to suspect that the car came from out of state at some point in it's life.

The car I found in Gardena back in the 70's (that I wrote to you about) had a raisin bran hood, not a shaker.

Did previous owners let the registration lapse at some point?  The car is currently wearing a current CA plate (with 7 characters), a 70 car (that never had it's reg lapse) would have a blue & gold plate (with 6 characters).

???

Mine is an LA car, sold in CA, and it has original chrome exhaust tips with the Cuda valance.

I'll take a look over the weekend under the package tray for the buildsheet.  The previous owner re-registered it early '06.  The tips and valance are original to the car (the rear valance is dated 10 23 69, the cars SPD is B05:).  I have read about the cars sold new in California not having the tips, and it is very possible that the car migrated to CA sometime early in life.  It is 100% rust-free with all of the original panels still in place, the fenders have never been removed from the car. And judging from the chips and general wear in the exterior paint, I don't think it has ever been repainted (aside from the engine compartment).  I used a Spot Rot and a paint gauge to verify before buying it.

Like I wrote in my original post, only newly sold hemicuda's & cuda 440-6's got the turndowns (due to noise regulations in California).  If it was a 49 state car, or had any other motor in it, it got the chrome exhaust tips through the valance.  Well, AAR's still had their side-exhaust.

Are there any California board members (5-0) that could run the VIN for me to find any previous ownership history?    :cooldancing:

Thanks hemiken

JS27- I wonder if this is the same 'Cuda?  It has factory undercoating and rear defog...  Those options would be more appropriate in the northeast.  Only 167 1970 'Cudas were optioned with the Gator Grain top, I doubt many would have been shaker, 4-spd, body side molding cars...  Anyway to ask the friend for more info abou his 'Cuda?  You can e-mail me if you would like @ hemiheadt1@optonline.net
