What wheels would have come from the factory on a 70 340 Cuda
« on: February 28, 2008 - 11:53:32 AM »
I bought a set of 15" rallye wheels last year for my Cuda and I really like them.  These 15" wheels replaced a set of 14" rallye wheels that where on the car when I bought it.  The 14" rallyes came where of 1972 vintage and not orginal to my Cuda.

Lately, I have seen some Cuda's with the painted steel wheels and that look is really starting to grow on me.  I thinking about this it got me to wondering what wheels orginally came on my Cuda from the factory.  Since I don't have a build sheet for my car (LA built 70 Cuda) what would be the most likely wheels (i.e. 14" rallye, 15" rallye, steel, etc.) that my Cuda would have come from the factory.  The car is a 70 4-speed 340 Cuda.

If you have the original drums on your car check and see if there is any remnants of red paint on the front surface of them. If there is you can narrow down the wheels that came on your car to either rallye wheels or magnum 500. If there is no red paint then I beleive you had steel wheels with some kind of hubcap.

72hemi, the car has factory front disk brakes, and I'm not sure if the rear drums are the orginal, but I'll check for red paint.  If the car has front disk brakes does this have any bearing on what wheels the car would have had from the factory?

Having disk brakes I don't believe has an impact on which wheels were installed at the factory.

Hey 72hemi, this is very interesting to me.  :clueless:

What does red paint have to do with it being rallies or magnums?  :dunno:

Because the drums could be seen through the wheels.

You didn't happen to find a broadcast sheet in the car did you?

So they were painted red from the factory if you had rallies or magnums?  That is pretty cool!  Thanks!  I didn't know that!

I went out and checked and indeed the rear drums have very old and faded looking red paint on them.  So the only question now is did the car come with rallyes or magnum 500's.  I guess no way to really ever know unless I can track down the orginal owner, which I doubt will ever happen.

Or the broadcast sheet, that would show what it came with.

My car was build at the LA plant, it is rare to find a broadcast sheet in an LA built car.  None the less, I have checked everywhere in the car and did not find one.   :(
