    trailer setup - what's up with stabilizer bars

    Ok guys,
    Need more help. I bought a 24' Haulmark enclosed trailer and now need to understand stabilizer bars and different class hitchs. Are there different typs of sway bars? Do they work? What are the differnt types of recivers and what is recommended? Here is a pic that was posted eariler but I really do not understad how these work...

    That set-up has a sway control bar also.  I towed a 12,000 lb trailer with a Super Duty without a stabilizer bar & sway control over 150 miles, won't ever do that again!  Every time I went down-hill, the trailer tried to swap places with the truck.  A month later, when I had to tow the trailer 300 miles, I borrowed a set.  They help distribute the weight of the trailer across the frame of the truck & the sway bar control eliminated any side-to-side motion I had earlier.  They work!

    I'm using something close to that picture.  Works great and I recommend it for everyone.  April can tell you also, she picked up a pair in Carlisle after a long ride without them.  The ride home was much nicer.   :grinyes:

    My set up looks a lot like that one I pulled a 20 foot car hauler behind a jeep g\c from Kansas to Florida and never had a problum. ( never made it with out one scary) :scared:

    DO not tow without them , get a class 3-4 with 10,000 lb + capacity

    I pulled a 24 ft enclosed behind my fiances 05 1500 with them and I could not imagine pulling that trailer without them.

    I towed my trailer from Fargo to Carlisle in 05 with an equlizer hitch and it went like a dream. There was no sway and you could drive with one hand on the wheel. Don't even think of doing it without one or you will be in for a not so fun ride.   :2cents:

    So I have recieved the message and will get the set-up before I pull my car. Next question - reciever hitch. I have a 2004 Dodge 2500 HD. Do you know what the rating is for the stock reciever hitch? I will look in the manuel tonight but I can guess it is less than the 10,000 lb recommended by Chryco.

    Thats my setup...class 3 reciever and Reese drop hitch with equalizer bars and sway control. The equalizer bars distribute the load over the entire setup and off the ball, makes for much more stable towing. The sway control really helps with trailer sway, especially with an enclosed trailer. If you have your tongue weight correct, sway should not be much of a problem to begin with, but a windy day can cause a lot of fun. My biggest problem with trailer sway is when i'm empty and a big rig with a box trailer passes me or i pass them...the upset of the air around the trailer can really upset the trailer when there is no weight back there. The sway control helps keep the sway to minimum.

    Just make sure your tongue weight is correct. Your tongue weight should be approx. 10% of your total trailer weight with everything in it..

    That's for sure 4C!  WHat a difference!  No more swaying of the cuda at anything over 50mph!

    the factory receiver hitch on a 3/4 ton Dodge is a class 3 & what you need , no need to replace ti
