we need a venting section
« on: February 29, 2008 - 10:26:18 PM »
Ok, so i bought a hood from a member on the board here and all was good..... i thought anyway. he told me that it was a straight, rust free hood, and the pictures showed that there was just one area that had cracked and they welded it together, no big. When i asked, he said that he had test fitted it on his car and it fit great. So i picked up the hood on my way back from vacation back in January, got it home, took it to my body shop guy, and went to pick it up tonight. He blasted it and when he did there was sections of the hood frame that were swiss cheese, the cowl area had rust holes, on of the hood latch bar bolts is broken off in the bolt hole so i cant even put both bolts in the latch bar, there were high spots, low spots, and dents, when my guy was sand blasting it, whatever was used on the hood to paint it or whatever was acting like chewing gum and the sand was just bouncing off. On top of all this, there was another area that had broken, they pressed it together and welded it causing a bow in the middle. we couldnt see this till it was mounted on my hood. I am so furious that i just wanted to throw the da*n thing across the yard. Thanks everyone for listening to my rants. I think i may go take pictures now and post them. i am just really POed

or the other guy is kinda like me and doesnt know diddly squat about identifying under paint flaws

One mans treasure is anothers trash.

Sorry you got burned, but we dont need a venting area, just whine right here, im all ears

but if he said that he checked it on his challenger and that it was perfect fit, and then i put it on and it has a huge bow from where someone welded on it, that is just wrong.  Thanks Al for listening

it wasnt on a car when i got the pics. they were of a hood in a garage, red bottom and gray top

i intentially left the members name out because i like to think that i am better than that. no need to call them out. i am going to try and contact them and see if he will work something out. the part that bugs me most is that i payed 200 to have the hood stripped and primed and now it was all for nothing

Big Bummer, I'd be pi$$ed to after the time and cost to get it /strip it /etc.
Yes, I would see if you could work something out with him. Just show him the facts...
And NO we don't need a venting section here, because it would get out of control real fast. That's another reason why this forum is the best...
A few thoughts would be fine if someone has a problem.

That's too bad things worked out that way. I think you are right not to name anyone. Hopefully he makes good on the deal.

If you look at another used hood check that area in the last picture on both sides of the cowl. Leaves get in there and cause rot when they get wet. I recently vacuumed out about two handfuls of oak leaves. Some still had paint on them from the last restore job. :2cents:

i called him and he pretty much said oh well, you looked at it when you picked it up. I told him what was going on and that when he sold it to me that he said that he had checked it on his challenger and that it fit really well and there was no rust. He said that if i send him the inserts back, the only good part of the hood, then he wouldnt charge me the 2nd 87 dollars. yea, i didnt pay a whole lot for the hood, but i payed a good amount to have it resurfaced and i got terrible gas mileage on our trip just to pick the thing up.

The title of this thread was not a suggestion, just something to let folks know that i was going to be venting about somehting.

very upset about the whole situation still but nothing i can really do now. I told him that i would pay the 175 for the hood and i am not going to short him. i am just going to have to bite my tounge and take it. i got the hood to look halfway decent by putting hood pins in and that holds the drivers side where it should be and the passeger side..... well, its the best that it is going to get. I didnt notice till yesterday that the front of the hood does like a elvis lip thing. will have to take a picture of that.

he is still a member here but when i talked to him he said that he hasnt been on here in a really long time.

You picked up the hood in person?
Maybe the guy had bowed fenders to match his bowed hood!!
Do you think the guy intentionally misled you? You thought the hood was good enough to buy and spend money to strip, and I guess the guy stripping it was willing to take your money so he didn't think it was a lost cause either. Maybe the guy you bought it from thought the same as you? Now if he had all the work done to hide the flaws and din't tell you about it, then shame on him.
I can't see bodywork at all. If it doesn't have major waves I don't see it.
I'm buying about 3K worth of sheetmetal for my challlenger restoration, you never know what is hiding behind that paint.
I was told this car had a little bubbling in front of the wheels on the quarter. After stripping it needs fenders, quarters, aprons, etc.
Buying used you always take a risk, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

yes, i picked it up in person, rerouted my vacation to go through where he was to pick it up. he had done some kind of work to it but not sure how extensive. Told me it was rust free and fit well on his challenger and was straight. My body guy couldnt see that warp till it was mounted on the car since the hoods have a natural curve to them anyway. I spoke with my body guy and he cut me a good deal because he felt bad that the hood is pretty much worthless and when i get back from getting deployed i am going to have to buy a new one now. I guess this is all a hard learning experiance letting me know to not fully trust anyone selling parts.

The bow through the middle is not that hard to fix, i wish i was over near some of you guys to help out sometimes.  It is amazing what a little bit of time amd some wood and a decent blow with a hammer will do.

And i am talking about the hood repairs. :smilielol:
