« on: March 02, 2008 - 08:16:19 AM »
Anyone have any thoughts about it? i was thinking of getting one of the deep pans that extends the sump lower for more fluid supply, not to mention the pan has a drain plug in it.

Well i'd advise don't go chrome. Much harder surface to seal since its so slick.

The stamped steel 904 pan i have, i like. Never understood why the 727 pan is another ~$40 over the 904. How much harder can they be to make? Get another quart, comes with a filter spacer, and drain pan. All happy here.

Make sure you get the nice thick rubber reuseable gasket from your local dealer. If they are too lame to not know they have '1970' 727 trans gaskets there.....just have them look up the earliest dodge ram they have in their parts catalog, 360, 727, it'll show. :D Thats what i did last time i needed one.

Yeah, I actually have a buddy in the parts department, so.... well, i"ll leave it there.  Anyway, I really appreciate the info! I didnt even think about the chrome being slick. So, does the stamped steal one look like the same finish as an original? or do you think it would rust?

I have used several of them.  I got the chrome for five bucks more, and scuffed up the gasket flange area slightly and it sealed fine.  They redid the pickup extension a while back from a three piece stamped metal looking thing to a billet aluminum piece.  Make sure the kit you get has the newer design one piece pump extension.  The gasket that came with mine was OK, but I like the older cork style better.   :2cents:

I just bought the summit deep aluminum. Holds two extra quarts. The sucker weighs 7.5 pounds and the flange is a full 1/2" thick. Well worth the 109.00.  Also bought the Mopar cork/rubber gasket P3690855

FYI, not sure of the part numbers but my old 2001 ram w/46re trans came stock with a deep pan that is deeper than the over the counter "deep sump" pan. had to replace it due to a tiny leak and thought "why not upgrade to a deep pan" only to find out the new one was shallower than the stock one.

I used the summit and B&M deep sump kits. It really helps to use studs instead of bolts to.

+1 vote for the Summit pan. No worries about sealing, looks great, very durable, and it's one of the few Summit brand items that they don't cast or engrave their name into! I think when I bought mine it was priced the same as the Mopar stamped one, but those prices have moved around lately so I don't remmeber for sure. Either way not a bad deal.

OK I'm gonna play devils advocate & ask why would you want a deep tranny pan & possibly create ground clearance issues?.. Would an extra transmission cooler not give the same if not more benefit?
