4 Prong Balast
« on: March 03, 2008 - 10:55:20 AM »
Is there correct way to install a 4 prong ballast resistor?

I know one side is for start and one is for run, but which is which?

there is different resisance on both sides of the ballast , 1 side is for the coil & 1 is for the ign ECU , the factory plugs were made so thay could not be reversed , , I assume you have added the ECU so if it the new ECU has only 4 pins not 5 then the dual resister is not used anyway , just use the 2 pin type for the coil

Thanks CP...

I am acutally rebuilding the exisitng wireing harness, and I have no confidence that the ballast was mounted or wired correctly.

I would need a wiring diagram to figure out how it is wired , I believe the lower resisatnce is the coil so the blue one end & brown to the coil on the other end

Sorry I shoudl have been more clear in my question.

Is there a top and bottom, as opposed to side to side.

Should the green wire (with red tracer) from the ECU go to the top or bottom of the ballast (does it matter).

I just have a feelign that mine is not right.  When I pulled the coil off, the tach lead (aftermarket) was hooked to the positive side of the coil.   When I look at the wireing diagram, the lead that was on the positive terminal should have been on the negative. It worked and the car ran, but I know that is not correct.

I am so confused...I just want to hook it al up right and have it run!!!!!

the ballast can be mounted either way up so top & bottom means nothing , the plugs should have a tab that fits into the xlot in the ballast to orient it , both plugs will have the tab on it & orients the plug the same way at either end of the ballast os no it doesn`t matter which plug goes to which end of the ballast

If you have an ohm meter, I can help you. According to my Haynes manual, the side of the resistor that goes to the coil and ignition switch is .5 ohms. The side that goes to pin 1 and 3 of the ECU connector is 5 ohms.

This is a crappy pic, but the top one is for you...

I do have an ohm meter, so I will check it out!

Charger Specialties has the terminal covers.
